Improving health and performance outcomes in footballers using 3D muscle analysis

Dr Bryan Heiderscheit is the Frederick Gaenslen Professor in Orthopedics and Vice-Chair of Research for the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation. He is the founding Director of the UW Health Runners’ Clinic; Director of Badger Athletic Performance with UW Athletics; and Co-director of the UW Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory. His research is aimed at understanding and enhancing the clinical management of musculoskeletal conditions, with particular focus on sports-related injuries. Matt Brown is the Director of Business Development at Springbok Analytics. He has been involved with severalearly-stage startups in the sports and health tech space where he has developed and executed go-to-market and growth strategies. Springbok Analytics specializes in providing advanced, AI-driven muscle analysis. It offers a platform that delivers precise, 3D muscle volume measurements using MRI images. The technology is revolutionising the areas of injury prevention, performance optimization, recovery monitoring and rehabilitation strategies across elite sports, and is now being used by many of the top professional football clubs.

Chris is a highly experienced Extended Scope Physiotherapist, Osteopath & MSK Sonographer. He is the current SMUG Faculty Lead, and has taught ultrasound both nationally and internationally on a variety of courses and conferences, at universities and professional sports clubs. He teaches diagnostic ultrasound as visiting lecturer at University College London (UCL) and Canterbury University. He has worked for the English Institute of Sport (EIS), British Athletics, Tottenham FC and worked at the London Olympics. Eddie Craghill Dr Eddie Craghill is a GP with a special interest in sports medicine. Alongside his NHS GP partnership, he is a Performance Support Medical Officer at Professional Game Match Officials Limited and Medical Director at Cragford Medical. Eddie was previously the Women’s Team Doctor at Manchester United and Lead Academy Doctor at Burnley FC. He studied medicine at the University of Liverpool before completing his GP training, and then undertaking a Master’s in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath. Eddie has a post-graduate certificate in Medical Ultrasound.

Jonathan Smith is the Managing Director of Swellaway Ltd and ProMOTION Fitness. A business professional with an MBA from Lancaster University that has run numerous businesses with technical products including global brands like HILTI, BASF, VELCRO over the last 36yrs. Since joining Swellaway Ltd in Sept 2022, Jonathan has led the business to set up international distribution partners to launch and sell ProMOTION EV1 across more than 20 countries. A passionate believer of research-based product technologies like ProMOTION EV1 as an important tool for FMPA members to consider for their toolkits. Dr. Olivia Greenhalgh, currently a Senior Research Associate at MMU, carried out her PhD on developing cryotherapy protocols for knee injury management, using theProMOTION EV1 device. Olivia was previously the Technical Specialist and Knowledge Transfer Associate at Swellaway Ltd, where her role involved developing an evidence base to support the targeted cooling approach. In recognition of the successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership project, Olivia was presented a ‘Future Leader’ award at the 2021 ‘KTP Best of the Best’ awards and was shortlisted for ‘Knowledge Transfer/Exchange of the Year 2022’ at the Times Higher Education Awards.

ACL Injury

Mr Andy Williams is a knee surgeon who has worked with many professional athletes, including Premier League football players and Premiership rugby players. He completed his medical training at King’s College Hospital in London before completing orthopaedic training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, after which he undertook a fellowship in Australia where he gained some of his first experiences in sports-related surgery. His expertise now lies in sports-related knee injuries and knee ligament issues. He undertakes approximately 100 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions every year. 90% of his work is with professional athletes. He is also a prize-winning researcher of knee-related issues.
