Paul Motian

From his early recordings with the Bill Evans trio in the 1950s, Paul Motian remained in the very highest echelons of jazz until his death in November 2011. His former colleague, the saxophonist Martin Speake, who worked with Motian on record and in concert, joins Alyn Shipton for a selection of the essential discs by this most innovative and influential of percussionists. As well as work with Evans, the programme includes pieces by Keith Jarrett, the trio with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell, and Motian's own Electric Bebop Band.

Very high production quality, with great talking heads and beautiful musical recordings but you only get small pieces of each track, which can be frustrating. If they took the opportunity of the podcast format to use larger segments then this would be a 5 star podcast, but as it is 4 is as much as I can give.
Why are so many of these podcasts unavailable, yet still advertised?

Wonderwhat'sgoingon

These podcasts are gems! Excellent productIons, despite tiny extracts (rights issues cause this, apparently) which will frustrate the seasoned listener, but even more so, the newcomer to great jazz. My main gripe is that so many of these podcasts are unavailable, at least at the time of writing. Typical BBC - no reason given, no explanation, just accept that really important episodes here just aren't available...'Auntie knows best', as usual, of course. One individual gripe (so far) is the missing Django Reinhardt podcast. It's there, but what you hear is Django BATES! Just another example of careless BBC editing we have become so used to in recent years.
