Texas Monthly True Crime: The Problem With Erik

Erik Maund had it all. A wife and kids, a mansion by the Austin Country Club golf course, and an executive position with his family’s car dealership. But in March 2020, a message from a stranger put everything at risk. Someone knew Erik had an affair with an escort, and wanted money to keep quiet. Erik didn’t pay the money, though. He didn’t go to the cops, either. Instead, he paid Charlie Sheen’s former bodyguard and a couple of special ops-trained security contractors to confront the blackmailer. Things didn’t go according to plan. In “The Problem with Erik,” host Katy Vine and producer Ana Worrel tell the twisted story of what came next: a perfect storm of secrets, mistaken identities, and tragic miscommunications that left two people dead. From the Texas Monthly team behind “Tom Brown’s Body,” “Stephenville,” and "Shane and Sally" comes the latest true story of crime and justice in the Lone Star State. Klein
22/08/2023
That guy Klein is a deluded and wreck less character. He clearly needs attention desperately, and of ours is making money the further things go on. There is a reason law enforcement are careful about what they say, not acting on conjecture or falsely throwing out theories that are absolutely baseless and calling them FACT. FACT. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he was rejected from the police force and has spent his life trying to chase them.
Very very good.

I’ve been hooked on this all day, very well researched and presented. Don’t want to give any spoilers but the last episode in the last few minutes of it really gave me insight into what probably happened.
Appalling:

I was interested until that awful, appalling “security” imbecile turned up. Self-important narcissist who just wanted to tell everyone how scary he was and how dark his world is. What a disgusting, insensitive snake oil salesman. after one episode of him… I’d had it.. he represents the sleaze of American hillbilly creeps, that we see on TV, and cringe. Repulsive.
Nicely done - good presenter
26/12/2021
I listen to a lot of True Crime, very few just tell the story in a clear, succinct fashion. I give up with a lot of “documentaries” early on when they’re clearly just an ego trip for the presenter. Credit to the presenter of this show though, good balance of being invested in the outcome but not wanting to be part of the story (unlike some characters in this particular tale!) I echo some of the points in other reviews about the final episode hinting at a possible conclusion to the story, which could have easily been demonstrated earlier on. Overall, an interesting story, well told.
Blowhards and slander
14/01/2022
I found this to be a really unprofessional and at times unbelievable podcast. The sheriff and the private detective employed by the mother both seem like complete blowhards and are allowed to just spread rumours at will, encouraged by the presenter who essentially acts as a gossip mongerer. It made me feel pleased that we have stronger libels laws in the uk so people can’t just broadcast allegations of murder and cover ups without any evidence. It’s a shame that the presenter didn’t rise above all the dirt throwing and actually apply some analysis rather than just stirring the rumour mill.
Great podcast

This was one of the first true crime podcasts I heard. I can see how complex this all seems. The fact his stuff show up in one place and he in another. Someone in that town knows what happened, I’m 100% sure. The host is a great story teller and I really enjoy his voice. And also I discovered the Avett Brothers because of this podcast and that beautiful song that Tom was hearing on the night he went missing.
Must listen

This is brilliant, really well researched and delivered, I was gripped from the start! Awesome.
The most ridiculous town in the world?
17/09/2021
This podcast should come with an advisory; alerting the listener to the fact that the people of Canadian are INCREDIBLY religious. What this means as a listener from the largely secular UK, is that we are dealing with a community with a very loose grasp of reality and the real world. I used to always think a lot of American film & tv, although hugely entertaining, was too ridiculous to be taken remotely seriously. I’ve come to realise that actually there really are people there who are THAT ridiculous. This podcast would be hilarious if a poor guy hadn’t died, but everyone involved bar none is totally clueless when it comes to talking sense. The P.I and police chief in particular are two ego maniacs warring it out to see who can say the most cheesy cliched line. It’s a semi-interesting story unfortunately featuring the most irritating, deluded people. The icing on the cake came in the final episode when the victim’s mother declared homosexuality to be sinful. This is the level of small town America that we’re dealing with. Definitely not recommended.
BRILLIANT.

Unbelievable story that is beautifully written & produced. Skip has a great voice. The eighth episode wraps up with questions that are extremely precise and leaves the listener pondering the deeper purpose of those questions.
Needs more thought
18/02/2021
So basically we listen to a multi part series only to find out in the last 10 minutes that the mother is homophobic, which makes the chances of this being a suicide much more likely. If Tom had been questioning whether he was part of the LGBTQ community is some way, he likely knew his mother would not be supportive. As a guy who everyone says always did what was expected of him, a good kid who didn’t want to worry his parents by coming home late without explanation, this would have caused great turmoil and could have lead to a suicide. It would have been nice if this theory was given as much consideration and air time as the theories about truckers and all the town gossip.
