    2020 BONUS: Grateful Expectations

Grit and determination to change your habits can only get you so far... if you want to be happier you have to stop and think about how nice people have been to you and how nice you can be to them in return. This circle of gratitude - the science suggests - will also make you a better friend to one of the most important people in your life... your future self.
Dr Laurie Santos investigates this effect with Northeastern University's Prof David DeSteno - author of Emotional Success: The Power of Gratitude, Compassion and Pride.

Well-made, interesting, useful

The podcast so far is just as fascinating and rigorously-evidenced as the course Dr Santos teaches at Yale but is more accessible (i.e. there's no homework) and with more stories and slicker voicing and editing. I loved episode two's exploration of ideas like how we're bad at modelling/predicting negative experiences how we underrate our capacity to adapt and find happiness in the bad experiences. Reframing negative experience, like 'seeing the bronze lining' in episode two, is something I'll add to my own happiness habits.

Highly recommend

The host, a Yale psychology professor, brings together scientific evidence of why we feel unhappy, and what can help us feel happier more often. If you’ve been thinking about what you can do to feel happier, I highly recommend this podcast. As well as the fascinating science, the stories are also very engaging. Highly recommend this podcast!

Love the podcast but the adverts go directly against what’s being discussed

Great episode and interesting research. The whole episode is about everyday human interactions and how ‘automating’ them away makes us more unhappy. I then got a bit annoyed as the advert in the episode was for door dash, a food delivery service
