#26 - BJJ - Life as a teenage athlete with Lani Strijbosch Nirvana Strength Practitioners' Panel

    • 健康與體能

BJJ fighter and Environmentalist, Lani is a 16 year old competitive athlete training out of RitualsJJ in Bali located at Nirvana Strength.

In 2016, my parents and I settled in Bali, Indonesia after leaving Belgium and traveling for 8 months. What I missed most was participating in high level sports where I pursued my passion with like-minded people. Unfortunately, they do not have competitive gymnastics here. I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a self-defence martial art and fell in love.

In January 2018, a father of a friend asked if I wanted to join a BJJ competition in March. I fought boys and adult women at the age of 14 and I knew this is what I wanted to do.

I prepare myself for competitions by doing training camps which last around 8 weeks. During this time, I train 20 hours a week which includes gi, no gi, and strength training. To be able to train these hours and keep up with schoolwork, I spend time training mentally: meditation, mindfulness, and breathing exercises. I also make sure to prevent injuries and help my body recover by going in the sauna, ice bath, and getting weekly massages.

I am willing to endure this hectic schedule and sacrifice a normal teenage life because I love BJJ! It is unlike any other sport; it is based on the science and art of submitting your opponent through technique and strategy. While strength and weight come into play, it is known to give lighter people the chance to beat heavier opponents. Additionally, BJJ allows me to think on my feet as it’s always changing. This cycle of problem-solving is what keeps BJJ both interesting and challenging. I enjoy pushing myself to the absolute limit and then finding out that was not the limit at all.
