LIFE IN WORDS, Episode 2: The Beats!

Did you read On the Road in High School? Fascinated by Howl's mix of gay sex and drugs and religious ecstasy when you were 15? Me too. Tom and I thought it would be interesting to go back and re-read some of the major Beat works from the 1950s. Oh what a world it was... Join us as we quote, riff, and get our kicks adult-style about Ginsburg, Kerouac, and the Beats!

How Did I Get Here, Episode 2: Jacob Strautmann

How Did I Get Here, Episode 2: Jacob Strautmann

In Episode 2, I talk with Jacob Stautmann about his upbringing in rural West Virginia and his debut poetry collection, "The Land of the Dead is Open For Business." Jacob talks about growing up in rural America, but being called to a life far from his home. His poems are animated by the frustrations and the beauty of his home state, and the guilt that sometimes remains when you are from a place, but no longer of that place.
For more information about the book, including an opportunity to order directly from the publisher, Four Way Books, thus cutting out the billionaires entirely, see https://fourwaybooks.com/site/the-land-of-the-dead-is-open-for-business/.

How Did I Get Here Episode One: Billy Hough

How Did I Get Here Episode One: Billy Hough

Interview podcast!  A podcast about the origin story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. We think of origin stories as something that  superheros have, or wealthy people. However, there are people doing amazing things, and leading amazing lives, all around us. In a culture that encourages us to be passive consumers of the products of corporate creativity. there are people all around us committed to doing amazing, creative things with their lives. And those people have origin stories worth hearing.
In episode one, I interview musician Billy Hough is a founding member of the punk group Garage Dogs, along with his brother’s Paul and Matt. For the past 15 years, Billy has been the driving force behind “Scream Along with Billy.” Over the course of our conversation, we cover his move from small town Mississippi to Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and finally Provincetown, MA, as Billy transforms himself from an awkward, nerdy teenager to front man of a Punk band, and, ultimately, into a humorous and brave interpreter of songs-- his own works and those of others. Please enjoy!
