The RMA Podcast. Episode 72. Jordan the Runner with Jordan Maki-Richards

Did you ever challenge yourself with a goal that brought not only your community together but brought pure joy to your life, and you did it because you just love what you do? That’s the story of Jordan the Runner. Jordan Maki-Richards who was born in South Carolina in the USA lives with her husband and two young girls in Tumut in the Snowy Mountains in NSW. In May 2023 Jordan set herself a challenge to run 200km from her front door in Tumut across the Snowy Mountains, crossing her finish line in Thredbo; a place considered the pinnacle of Australia's mountain playgrounds. As most mums would agree, this would take a lot of time out of the family schedule, and we chat to Jordan about how she made this possible, how she trained and what things she needed to put in place for her safety and her sanity to make this goal a possibility.  Jordan showcased the traverse of her incredible backyard through the short film by Tom's Outdoors, "Jordan the Runner". Through this film we see the power of community and the journey of one woman to continue to discover her joy though the simple movement of running, inspiring in us all to seek possibility in your own backyard! But we don’t stop there; we find out a heap more about this humble Mum athlete and what makes her tick, including some of her incredible accomplishments to date such as: 4th Female at Cascade Crest 100mile in Washington USA in 2022, 2nd place at the Buffalo Stampede Grand Slam in 2022, 1st Place Female at the Buffalo Stampede in 2023 and  11th place Female this year at the Hardrock 100 in the USA. Let this episode inspire you as you seek to find your own joy in Running and what is possible for you. You can watch "Jordan the Runner" here. You can follow Jordan over on Instagram here. 3. The RMA Podcast. Episode 71. Voice & Visibility of Women's Running in Trail & Ultra Running

    07/29/2024

The RMA Podcast. Episode 71. Voice & Visibility of Women's Running in Trail & Ultra Running

On this episode of the RMA Podcast we talk about the voice and visibility of Women’s Running, particularly in the Trail & Ultra Running space. I am joined by Ali Pottinger, Owner and Coach of Squadrun in New Zealand, Mum, Teacher, & Event Race MC, Catherine Graue, Partner of the race director & Communications & behind the scenes extraordinaire of Kunanyi Mountain Run & Kunanyi trail Series in Tasmania, Lyndal Maloney, Owner and Coach for Serotonin Running, a women’s running group in the Blue Mountains of Sydney, and Founder of She Runner Australia, a working group comprising of women runners who are working towards increasing female participation in trail and ultra running events, as well as making the sport more equitable and accessible for women. They have been doing a fair bit of work on researching what women want, understanding the current trail and ultrarunning ‘climate’, and taking this information to develop a set of guidelines for race directors.  The end goal is more women in the sport, and race directors putting on a fabulous, inclusive race.  All of these women are mums and runners themselves and passionate about getting women out running and helping to create environments in our communities and events that make us feel safe and supported as running women. Women deserve to have a voice and visibility in women’s running and events, and we as recreational runner's have an important part to play in growing and shaping women's sport. In this episode are wanting to encourage YOU the listener, and all recreational runner's that they are role models in our sport and have an important part to play in sharing what is important to them as a woman runner both personally, and to the wider community so that we can collectively create powerful and positive change. In this episode we discuss things like the unique challenges women face in the running community, and what can we do within our own circle of influence to improve things in these areas, support systems for women, safety, training for women vs men, pelvic health issues, fertility, breastfeeding or inclusivity for children at event at events, lack of confidence, the menopause transition, female coverage in media/social media in our sport, recognition and awards for female podium finishes, and what considerations should races be giving concerning women’s health and wellness; such as pregnancy, menstruation and postpartum support, and many more ways that races can ensure that their events are inclusive and welcoming to women, and how they can help foster a sense of community among female runners. We loved sharing in these topics as running women, and encourage you to share this episode with those you know may help to create powerful change when it comes to the voice and visibility of Women’s Running. Whilst this podcast focuses on Trail and ultra events, these issues certainly affect all female runners and we would love to empower change across the board. The RMA Podcast. Episode 70. Marathon dreams as a marathon mum. With Jessica Stenson

This week on the RMA Podcast we are excited to welcome back 36 year old Marathon Mum, Jessica Stenson! Since we had Jess on the podcast right back in Episode 11, she has continued to wow us with her marathon running achievements, and she has been busy! Jessica has recently run her 16th marathon in Degu, South Korea securing herself a PB and another Qualifying time towards selection for the Women's Marathon in Paris 2024 Olympics. Not only did she qualify in the qualifying window, she did so only 7 months after having her second child Ellie!   In this episode we discuss what the marathon means to Jess, and the lessons that she has learnt as a marathon runner since her debut marathon. We discuss the daily habits that she has formed in training  and in mindset that have led to her success, and how we can use this approach in our own training.   We discuss the race day logistics she had to take when travelling and competing at a high level with a baby in tow, and how this actually made her feel calmer than ever before in a marathon event, and how this may have just led to her race day success! We also discuss how Jess trained and cross trained during her pregnancies and how that differed from her first pregnancy to her most recent, and how she built up her training safely and successfully after the birth of Ellie to compete for Degu, including her positive approach to the outcome and the support that she had in her corner to believe that her dream was possible.  We also talk about the selection process for the Paris marathon and how Jess feels about being one of the six Aussie women to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Marathon in the qualifying window, and her approach to navigating the outcome of the selection no matter what it might be.  If you love marathon running, or dream of running a marathon one day, Jess is such a great role model to learn from. She is a humble, giving athlete of her time and energy, especially to our RMA Community, and you will just love this episode!
