Why Did I Get Cancer?

Why did I still get it? Was there something else I could have done to prevent it? A couple years later, I am grateful to be cancer-free and now I’m on a mission to share everything I’ve learned about mitigating risk, managing symptoms, and staying mentally well when bad things happen – even if you “did everything right!” ‘Why Did I Get Cancer‘ features: • Eye-opening information about health/cancer risks that surround us (and solutions to mitigate risks) • Health & lifestyle tips to lower risk (easier and quicker than you’d think!) • Inexpensive solutions for lowering cancer risk DISCLAIMER: The information provided on this podcast pertaining to your health or wellness, or any other aspect of your life is not intended to be a substitute for the professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment provided by your own Medical Provider or Mental Health Provider. 98. Does living a high-stress life increase the risk of cancer?

How often do you hear people say, "I'm so stressed!"? I admit that I find myself saying it at least a few times a week. Today's podcast guest is Kerstin Lindquist, a QVC host and stress expert. After witnessing her mother battle dementia and experience "black spots" on her brain that doctors attributed to stress, Kerstin researched and identified 20 strategies—ranging from simple to complex—to help reorganize your life. I can't wait for you to hear her suggestions—one of them took me only a few seconds to implement, and I’m already feeling less stressed. Woot woot! About Kerstin Lindquist Over the last twenty years Kerstin has connected on a personal level with her more than 150 million viewers on QVC and network news through confident vulnerability and the curated ability to tell a story that makes you feel. She currently hosts one of the most watched shows on QVC. Her skillful communication drives more than 250 million dollars a year in direct sales through her presentations on air and online.   Kerstin is an Emmy Award winning, certified health coach and growth strategist, pairing her training in health science with biblical truth. She’s a contributor to publications such as Sail Magazine, Vibrant Life, FoxNews.com and America Adopts. She is the author of two books on faith and wellness.  As a keynote speaker her purpose is to make faith come alive in others. She speaks to individuals and organizations, focusing on wellness, faith, and exceptional sales. She delivers techniques that empower high-performing humans to gain more confidence and create space for joy. Kerstin is a mom of three. She and her family live on a sunny hill in eastern PA. They spend their free time traveling to places with water, sun, and sand. www.kerstin-lindquist.com _______ Amazon Store When I began detoxing my life after being diagnosed with cancer, I felt overwhelmed and confused. I thought I was already making good health choices, but the more I researched, the more I discovered that small changes could lead to significant improvements. For instance, switching from tea bags to loose-leaf tea can help prevent additional microplastics from accumulating in my body. These plastic particles can affect my hormones and contribute to inflammation. This was such a simple swap! I was so encouraged that I started to make more simple swaps. And now, I have an Amazon Store listing many of my favorite detox tips! Click here to check to see my simple swaps. _______ Air Doctor I’ve been using the Air Doctor air purifier for almost a year, and I absolutely love it! I first heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman, and even though it was a bit of a splurge compared to what I usually spend, I’m so glad I made the investment. Every time I change the filter and see all the gunk it collects, it just makes me smile knowing it’s doing such a great job keeping my air clean! 97. Things I Wish I Had Known Thirty Years Ago.

We all have those regrets about things we wish we had done or known sooner in life, don't we? Lately, I've been having some fun on my podcasts by asking guests what advice they would share with their younger selves. The answers have been so surprising and insightful! It made me think about what advice I would give my 25-year-old self. I'd tell her: Don't make decisions based on fear. Push the pause button before you respond to a negative situation. Don't WORRY! God will always work it out. I hate to admit that I've spent a considerable chunk of my adulthood making decisions based on fear. Fear complicates, and truth liberates. I wish I would have understood that in my younger years. But it's never too late, and I can tell you that cancer changed me. I had a choice of being frozen by fear or pushing the pause button when fearful thoughts came rushing in. Pushing the pause button, for me, meant taking a moment to breathe, ask more questions, gather more information, and not get caught up in the whirlwind of fearful thoughts.  I can't say that I never go down the rabbit hole of scary thoughts, but it happens much less often than it used to!  That's progress, baby. Listen to today's podcast if you're ready to conquer fear with simple tips. My interview with guest Jamie Winship transformed my life. 94. October Reflections: Your Questions, My Answers!

I love answering questions! And, well, I also love reflecting, so there you go ;) Let's start with the questions I received this month: Questions: 1: How do I train myself to stay calm? I am making an effort to stay in a peaceful state. I focus on pressing the pause button before I respond, remembering to pause and take intentional breaths. I learned these techniques from reading the book Breath. Additionally, I move my body several times daily and stand during work calls or podcast recordings. I also take 1-2 exercise classes each week. I also use essential oils such as lavender and "calming" blend I buy from Young Living Oils (link below!). Resources: Dwell Bible App Essential oils, young living Class Pass Breath, The New Science of a Lost Art (book) 2: How do I transition from summer to fall with food, activity, and self-care? I transition from salads to warmer foods such as grilled veggies, protein, and soups. I still go outside every morning, rain or shine, and look toward the sunrise, as this helps reset my circadian rhythm, which helps me fall asleep faster and stay asleep. I use Class Pass to stay active, which allows me to move my workouts inside if the weather is terrible. I can also use Class Pass while traveling to try different workouts. I love it! I protect my sleeping environment by lowering the lights at night and wearing my blue light blockers (this helps my body produce more melatonin). We also use an Air Doctor machine in our bedroom; I bought one because so many people I respect in this field were talking about them, and I love it! And it provides a little white noise as well, a win-win. Resources: Air Doctor Sleep Mask Bon Charge (blue light-blocking glasses) _________Young Living Essential Oils I love!  I have FINALLY found an essential oil company that I LOVE! I use the Young Living brand of oils because I'm impressed with their quality and commitment to sourcing the best products with the least environmental impact. I'm not easy to impress! 93. Cheap and Easy Home Detox with The Healthy Home Experts Ron & Lisa Beres (RE-RELEASE)

You know what? Making your home less toxic can be quite a puzzle! I never even thought about hidden toxins in my home until I chatted with some guests on my podcast. It got me thinking about where these toxins might be hiding.  To keep things manageable, I decided to tackle it one room at a time. I also didn't want to toss out stuff I loved and paid good money for, even if they were "just a little toxic."   And what does "just a little toxic" actually mean? HELP! That's why I started looking for a lower-cost way to detox my home. And that's how I found Ron and Lisa Beres, the Healthy Home Dream Team. Lisa's life turned upside down after she became severely ill from exposure to toxins in a newly remodeled home. On her healing journey, she discovered simple and inexpensive ways to detox your home, office, and probably the most crucial room for women: the bathroom! 92. Protect Your Peace to Prevent Disease with Dr. Gregg Jantz (RE-RELEASE)

Clearing the Path: Eliminating Toxic Relationships for a Better Life When your button pusher walks toward you, do you pretend not to see them? Okay, maybe it's just me! Before cancer, I had a handful of toxic people in my life. I didn't spend a lot of time with them, but when I did see them, I could feel my anxiety rising even before we got together! When today's podcast guest, Dr. Jantz, mentioned that he wanted to do a podcast about the impact of toxic people on our health, I was all in! Spending time with toxic people can affect your health in the following ways: It can increase your sympathetic response, leading to higher heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Your body may produce more stress hormones, which can cause inflammation. It can also damage your confidence and affect your sense of identity. How do you move the toxic people out of your life, especially if they are family members? Dr. Jantz suggested having a friend or spouse nearby when dealing with difficult family members at events. If you get upset, use a pre-agreed safe word to signal for support in removing yourself from the situation. With some pre-planning, you can avoid getting caught up in their negativity. Listen to today's podcast to hear the rest of Dr. J.'s tips on dealing with toxic people. 91. Take a Chill Pill. Is staying peaceful the key to health?…with Dr. Natalie Greenberg

Take a Chill Pill. Oh Lord, help me to relax and push the pause button. Today's guest, Dr. Natalie Greenberg from The Center for New Medicine, explained how important it is for my health to hit the pause button. She also mentioned that when life gets overwhelming, It's crucial to pause and take a deep breath before reacting to any situation. Her words spoke to me. I tend to be an "over-responder." I might get irritated with someone before I have all the information about a situation. I might wake up upset because of a restless night, and my negative thoughts kick in, telling me how tough the day will be. How could my life be different if, instead of following my default of reacting, I took a minute, slowed down my breathing, pushed the pause button, gathered my thoughts, and then responded INSTEAD of reacting? Nervous System: This would help my body stay in a parasympathetic state (the rest and digest state), so my body wouldn't produce as many stress hormones. This means I'd have lower levels of inflammation and, honestly, better relationships! Immune System: Staying calm supports the immune system and allows your body to produce more "happy hormones," such as serotonin and melatonin, which means you fall asleep faster. The Joy Factor: thinking the best about people means I look for joy everywhere I go. When I see someone wearing a cute outfit or making me a fabulous matcha latte, I PRAISE THEM! The Bible says, to the best of my abilities, be at peace with people at all times. Pro tip: The scripture above says that, to the best of my abilities, sometimes it's impossible to be at peace with some people, and you know what? That's okay, too. The older I get, the more I realize my gift to people is letting them be who they are.
