Why Did I Get Cancer?

Why Did I Get Cancer?

I did all the right things to prevent getting cancer. A certified health coach, nutritionist & wellness speaker, I thought I’d be the last person to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Why did I still get it? Was there something else I could have done to prevent it? A couple years later, I am grateful to be cancer-free and now I’m on a mission to share everything I’ve learned about mitigating risk, managing symptoms, and staying mentally well when bad things happen – even if you “did everything right!” ‘Why Did I Get Cancer‘ features: • Eye-opening information about health/cancer risks that surround us (and solutions to mitigate risks) • Health & lifestyle tips to lower risk (easier and quicker than you’d think!) • Inexpensive solutions for lowering cancer risk DISCLAIMER: The information provided on this podcast pertaining to your health or wellness, or any other aspect of your life is not intended to be a substitute for the professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment provided by your own Medical Provider or Mental Health Provider. 101. My Key Takeaways from 2024

As hard as I try, I still get caught up in "being busy." What does this mean? I'm asking myself the same question! It means I want to achieve and accomplish much each day. However, I often do this at the expense of my personal care. For example, my morning routine is sacred to me. I get up, read my Bible, write in my gratitude journal, get outside, and let's not forget the key component - DRINK MY COFFEE! In January, I committed to lifting more weights to gain more muscle. There's a class that's offered at 7 am. I love the class, but now my morning routine is out of whack, and subsequently, the rest of my day is a bit wonky. I've gone back to prioritizing my morning routine and exercising later in the day (I don't love exercising later, but my morning routine is pivotal for productivity). Here's a link to one of my favorite breathing experts, Dr. James Nestor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6yAY1oZUOA I have two more surprising takeaways for you. _______ Body DeliCheckout my favorite products from Body Deli that are always in my bathroom. Creme de la Rose moisturizer. Phoenix lift face and neck oil (when I run out of this, my face gets so dry and cranky!) Blueberry Fusion Cleanser. Vitamin C Serum. Use the code 'ENOS15' at checkout for 15% off! _______ Butcher BoxI'm picky about fish. For years, I would only eat fish in restaurants because I had no clue how to prepare it. Then I discovered that when I buy fish at the supermarket, it is DOUBLE FROZEN. What?! Could that be why my fish texture would be a little off? Did you know that ButcherBox only freezes their salmon ONCE? I'm a huge fan of their wild Alaskan sockeye salmon. Right now, you can get a year of salmon for FREE. That's a $422 value, and you get $20 off of your first box. Click here to purchase

    100. Menopause: Why Sex Hurts and How to Fix It. Part 2

Hearing the words, "You have cancer," had to be the biggest shock of my life. My oncologist advised me to go off of all hormone treatment immediately. So, within 48 hours, I had a cancer diagnosis, hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, and painful sex. I'm a pretty happy and upbeat person, but the combination of this diagnosis, along with all of these other important things, was almost too much. Today's guest, Dr. Corinne Menn, believes that our treatment of women in menopause can be downright inhumane. She explained that there are better ways to move women off of hormones during cancer and that there rarely needs to be an immediate change. We also talked about the importance of having a positive and enjoyable sexual relationship. She was saying that so many of her patients have given up on sex due to pain. Dr. Menn explained the power of vaginal estrogen and how this one change can result in significant changes. Listen to the episode to learn how to Make Sex Great Again! Click here to listen to part one of my special menopause episode with Dr. Menn. About Dr Corinne Menn Dr. Corinne Menn is a board-certified OBGYN and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. 99. Menopause: Why Aren't We Doing More to Help Women Feel Better? Part 1

Let's talk about menopause.  When I was in my twenties, most of my nutrition clients were in their 50s. I would talk to them about hot flashes, low libido, and weight gain and "what they could do about it," exercise more, eat less, you know, the drill. I remember a few of my clients laughing at me and saying, "Oh, honey, in thirty years, give us a call and let us know what you think of the advice you're giving us!" Fast forward to 2020, when I was forced into INSTANT menopause after my breast cancer diagnosis, and oh goodness, I'm mortified by my lack of compassion and understanding of menopause in my twenties. Today's guest is Dr. Corinne Menn. She's a menopause expert, a world-renowned OB-GYN, and a twenty-four-year breast cancer survivor.  Dr. Menn explained that a recent study discovered that only 7% of ob/gyns were comfortable talking to their patients about menopause. WHAT?!?Who is supposed to help us? How about our quality of life, including sleep and weight gain? Not to mention the higher risk of heart disease. And should we talk about sex? I think we should. Sex can be incredibly painful during the menopause years. Dr. Menn is here to help! Her advice regarding tackling these menopause challenges was invaluable. I loved her tips on weight loss and sleep, and I will say it again: SEX! About Dr. Corinne Menn Dr. Corinne Menn is a board-certified OBGYN and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. 97. Things I Wish I Had Known Thirty Years Ago.

We all have those regrets about things we wish we had done or known sooner in life, don't we? Lately, I've been having some fun on my podcasts by asking guests what advice they would share with their younger selves. The answers have been so surprising and insightful! It made me think about what advice I would give my 25-year-old self. I'd tell her: Don't make decisions based on fear. Push the pause button before you respond to a negative situation. Don't WORRY! God will always work it out. I hate to admit that I've spent a considerable chunk of my adulthood making decisions based on fear. Fear complicates, and truth liberates. I wish I would have understood that in my younger years. But it's never too late, and I can tell you that cancer changed me. I had a choice of being frozen by fear or pushing the pause button when fearful thoughts came rushing in. Pushing the pause button, for me, meant taking a moment to breathe, ask more questions, gather more information, and not get caught up in the whirlwind of fearful thoughts.  I can't say that I never go down the rabbit hole of scary thoughts, but it happens much less often than it used to!  That's progress, baby. Listen to today's podcast if you're ready to conquer fear with simple tips. My interview with guest Jamie Winship transformed my life. 94. October Reflections: Your Questions, My Answers!

I love answering questions! And, well, I also love reflecting, so there you go ;) Let's start with the questions I received this month: Questions: 1: How do I train myself to stay calm? I am making an effort to stay in a peaceful state. I focus on pressing the pause button before I respond, remembering to pause and take intentional breaths. I learned these techniques from reading the book Breath. Additionally, I move my body several times daily and stand during work calls or podcast recordings. I also take 1-2 exercise classes each week. I also use essential oils such as lavender and "calming" blend I buy from Young Living Oils (link below!). Resources: Dwell Bible App Essential oils, young living Class Pass Breath, The New Science of a Lost Art (book) 2: How do I transition from summer to fall with food, activity, and self-care? I transition from salads to warmer foods such as grilled veggies, protein, and soups. I still go outside every morning, rain or shine, and look toward the sunrise, as this helps reset my circadian rhythm, which helps me fall asleep faster and stay asleep. I use Class Pass to stay active, which allows me to move my workouts inside if the weather is terrible. I can also use Class Pass while traveling to try different workouts. I love it! I protect my sleeping environment by lowering the lights at night and wearing my blue light blockers (this helps my body produce more melatonin). We also use an Air Doctor machine in our bedroom; I bought one because so many people I respect in this field were talking about them, and I love it! And it provides a little white noise as well, a win-win. Resources: Air Doctor Sleep Mask Bon Charge (blue light-blocking glasses) _________Young Living Essential Oils I love!  I have FINALLY found an essential oil company that I LOVE! I use the Young Living brand of oils because I'm impressed with their quality and commitment to sourcing the best products with the least environmental impact. I'm not easy to impress! Hit the link in my bio to see my list of favorite Young Living oils.  Make sure to use the code SHAREYL to get 10% off your first $50 or more order! _________ This episode is sponsored in part by ButcherBox.
