Getting REAL About Clinician Identity, Chronic Illness, Toxic Positivity, and Self-Worth with Dr. Susie Squats, DPT

What if doing meaningful work in healthcare meant redefining what “sustainable” actually looks like? This episode of ChiroShift is one of our most honest conversations yet. Taylor sits down with Dr. Susie "Squats" Spirlock (@dr.susie.squats) a physical therapist, barbell rehab coach, business owner, and human navigating chronic illness in real time. Susie gets deeply real about the not-so-pretty side of being a clinician and entrepreneur while managing HEDS, long COVID, gut issues, and the constant identity shifts that come with them. She shares her journey from traditional clinic life to building a values-aligned business that actually supports her health instead of destroying it. They unpack the identity crisis so many clinicians face, the pressure to perform online while dealing with real limitations, and how chronic illness reshaped the way Susie coaches, leads, and shows up for her clients. This conversation challenges hustle culture, toxic positivity, and the idea that your worth as a clinician is tied to how much you can produce. If you’ve ever loved this profession but questioned whether it can love you back, this episode will land hard... in the best way. Beyond Traditional Rehab with Dr. Hannah Sadowsky

This episode kicks off a brand new ChiroShift series focused on clinicians who are doing things differently, and starting with the identity behind the title. Taylor sits down with Dr. Hannah Sadowsky (@hsadowsky) physical therapist, strength coach, former high-level gymnast, and clinician at Old Bull Athletics, to explore how blending coaching, rehab, and performance can reshape both patient outcomes and professional fulfillment. Hannah shares her journey from competitive gymnastics to physical therapy school, hospital-based care, and ultimately finding her home at Old Bull, where one-on-one, outcome-driven care replaces high-volume, insurance-based models. She opens up about the identity shift that comes with stepping outside traditional PT roles, learning to sell outcomes rather than time, and gaining confidence through repetition, education, and lived experience. The conversation dives deep into gymnastics-specific rehab and performance, including return-to-sport decision-making, managing extreme forces, working with hypermobile athletes, and applying principle-based care in the absence of formal clinical guidelines. Hannah breaks down how strength, load management, and positional training are essential for reducing reinjury risk, particularly in populations like gymnasts, cheerleaders, and dancers, and why movement and training must extend far beyond the treatment table. Taylor and Hannah also explore broader themes relevant to all clinicians: informed consent, navigating imposter syndrome, collaborating with medical teams, ethical decision-making, and redefining what “enough” care really means. From adult gymnastics and inner-child movement to working with athletes with neurological differences, this episode highlights what’s possible when clinicians lead with principles, clarity, and confidence instead of rigid systems. This conversation is for physical therapists, chiropractors, and healthcare providers who feel constrained by traditional models and are curious about hybrid care, strength-based rehab, and building a career that aligns with both their values and their expertise. John Flagg on Clinical Identity, Exercise Programming, and Why Challenge Matters More Than Complexity

What if the biggest thing holding chiropractors back isn't skill, it's identity? John Flagg (@john.rebuild_stronger) returns to ChiroShift to tackle how to confidently own who you are, what you do, and why it matters. This isn't about finding the perfect program. It's about understanding that your credential is just the starting point, and everything after that is up to you. John and David explore why introducing yourself as "just a chiropractor" immediately puts you in a box. They dive into the dangerous trap of "programming as entertainment" and why constantly changing exercises undermines results. John shares how Mike Tuchscherer's approach of changing nothing until weights stop going up challenges everything we think about programming. The conversation gets real about injury and resilience. The most resilient athletes aren't the ones who avoid setbacks, they're the ones who've learned to navigate them. John doesn't hold back on a hard truth: we're under-serving patients by under-loading them, and they get re-injured when we're not around to blame. John breaks down his approach to teaching movement categories instead of individual exercises so clients have options when things don't feel right. He reveals the most underrated tool in training: creating a fun, challenging environment. If you've ever felt stuck between what you were trained to do and what you know your patients actually need, this episode will reset your entire approach. Link to John's book can be found here. Breaking the Mold: Finding Your Clinical Identity & Building Care That Actually Works

ChiroShift is back with a new season, and we’re kicking it off by revisiting one of the core themes of the podcast: redefining what it means to be a chiropractor. In this episode, David Newton is joined by returning cohost Taylor Goldberg to share her full story, from competitive cheerleading and chronic injury, to chiropractic school, burnout in a high-volume practice, and ultimately building a successful, non-traditional career as a hypermobility-focused coach. Taylor walks through the identity crises that shaped her path, including leaving pre-med, navigating a chiropractic education that didn’t align with her values, and a pivotal injury that forced her to question the safety and role of adjustments, especially for hypermobile patients. Her experience ultimately led her to challenge traditional chiropractic models and prove that high-value, evidence-based care does not have to revolve around volume, manual therapy, or outdated philosophies. The conversation expands into what evidence-based care actually means today, why clinical practice guidelines matter, and how chiropractors can ethically build thriving practices without sacrificing their integrity. David and Taylor discuss the limitations of manual-only care, the importance of outcomes over dogma, and how technology, coaching, and hybrid or virtual models allow clinicians to create real, lasting change in patients’ lives. This episode sets the tone for the new season of ChiroShift, highlighting clinicians who are breaking the mold, choosing their own path, and reshaping healthcare from the inside out. If you’ve ever questioned your role in the profession, felt misaligned in practice, or wondered if there’s another way to be a chiropractor, this conversation is for you.
