From Medical Education Matters, welcome to the Philosophies of Medical Education Transformation Lab (P-METaL) podcast series, a forum for thought-provoking discussions at the intersection of medicine, philosophy, and medical education. In this episode, hosts Fabrice Jotterand, and James Woodruff discuss metaphysics in medical education, the fundamental assumptions that drive our practice of medical education, as well as diving into the value of the humanities and humanism in medicine and flourishing. Welcome to our first episode of a new series, exploring the intersection of philosophy and medicine. In this episode, host Michael Braun talks with the two hosts of the new series. Fabrice Jotterand, PhD, MA, is professor of bioethics and medical humanities at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he also directs the Philosophies of Medical Education Transformation Lab (P-METaL). James Woodruff, MD, is dean of students and professor of medicine for the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago.
In this episode, we explore what philosophy brings to medicine and how Drs. Jotterand and Woodruff will use their passions for this intersection to delve into the complex interplay between these two sometimes divergent disciplines.

The end of the year is a time for big celebrations, family, and keeping warm (at least here in Wisconsin). With all those big things going on, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the little joys in teaching and learning, things we might otherwise overlook but that are so important to be grateful for.
To start the episode, Jeff and Anita talk with Kari Schultz, an education program coordinator on the MCW-Central Wisconsin campus. Starting after Thanksgiving, Kari posts a daily holiday wear and festive decoration photo on her Facebook profile, including special guests.
