    My old friend Courtney on the east coast has me occasionally speak to her college students studying health and fitness. As part of their assignment, they peppered me with really thoughtful questions.

    It was great to reflect on the thought processes of today's youth, and their keen interest in living, healthy, active, evolved lifestyles. I think you will get some amusement and value out of my answers, so please enjoy this Part 1. They hit me with tons of questions, so stay tuned for Part 2. Note: the background noise is from Los Angeles traffic as I recorded in the car, for some reason I communicate well under pressure!

    These questions were really thoughtful and wide-ranging. I talk about my career transition from accountant to pro triathlete, all kinds of diet insights and tips, lots of talk about hot and cold therapy, how to manage health goals when you have a crazy life schedule, how to eat healthy on a budget, and what it’s like to ride 100 miles on no calories!

    These students are from Quincy College in Boston, MA, and many are older students taking advantage of MA free-tuition offers for first-time adult college students—including ex-military folks.

    Brad Kearns: Hard Work Is Overrated, Kobe And Tiger Are Embellishing, And Young Athletes Need More Rest

    Is hard work overrated? I share my thoughts on this in today’s episode, which I was inspired to record after watching a TikTok video a friend sent me about the importance of working hard, never missing a day, and why cranking out 100 shots a day is the “simple formula” to help you get a full scholarship.

    As you will hear, I strongly disagree with the premise, which has been firmly disproven with emerging science. If you are someone who struggles with balance or taking a day off, this is a great episode to listen to: you will learn how never taking a day off affects your physical and mental health, the science behind the importance of taking breaks and giving your brain the time it needs to rest, and the truth behind the effectiveness of the 10,000 theory Malcolm Gladwell adopted and described in his book Outliers.

    I also talk about why rest is such a necessity for young athletes and reveal that even people like Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods have been guilty of embellishing facts and going to extremes for the sake of “hard work.”

    It is so nice to connect with an international guest like Louise and to hear, unfortunately, that the same problems that exist in America also exist in Europe, especially when it comes to the issues aging women have with losing body fat. In this episode, you will hear us discuss a variety of topics, especially the roadblocks and main reasons for having trouble maintaining your desired body composition. We discuss the foods that cause system wide inflammation and how chronic inflammation influences fat metabolism and causes your body to store extra body fat, especially visceral fat, as well as the difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat.

    You’ll also learn about the importance of nurturing a healthy estrogen balance (as well as healthy testosterone balance), why it’s so helpful to manage stress when you’re trying to lose excess body fat, how chronic stress affects your metabolism, how vitamin D health affects fat metabolism, and actionable tidbits from Louise that will help you lose weight easily.

    Breather: The Truth Behind Running Overuse Injuries

    Did you know that there is no data that has ever been presented that has shown that elevated, cushioned shoes prevent running injuries?

    In this podcast, we’re getting to the truth behind the stunning and embarrassing rate of overuse injuries. A 2021 meta study from Europe revealed an annual injury rate of 37 to 56% of regular runners, Runner’s World reported 46% of runners get injured every year, a study from Yale reports 50%, while Wake Forest Biomechanics Laboratory says 79% of runners get an overuse injury every year. Interestingly, The American College of Sports Medicine states that 25% of all runners are sidelined at a given time—a stat worse than the injury rates for NFL players (31 percent injured annually with four percent at a given time)!

    In this episode, we get to the bottom of this issue, since there have been many misconceptions and misunderstandings about what is causing these running inquiries, and the nuances are quite interesting. As you will learn, one of the great lies of the fitness industry that has ever been propagated is that elevated, cushioned shoes prevent injuries—a lie that has been going on for 50 years! This is the perfect show to listen to if you want to learn the truth about cushioned shoes and the science that explains why they do not support foot health and athletic performance and actually generate 7 times more impact trauma than landing in bare feet. As you will hear, the entire premise of elevated, cushioned running shoes is deeply flawed—what they really do is enable people to run long distances and get injured.
