    Foundation First with Chris Janke

Chris Janke and I talk about the importance of building a strong foundation, establishing core strength and flexibility while moving at your own consistent pace.

Chris Janke is a father, author, and host of the “Health in the Real World” podcast. He has been a  personal trainer since 2004 and places an emphasis on first building a strong foundation and continuing from there. He is a big fan of bodyweight training and progressing in a safe manner. He aims to help his clients build strength, flexibility, and core at the same time. It was great to talk to Chris and learn about some of the more basic, yet no less important, parts of the human anatomy that should be focused on to live a truly functionally healthy body. You can find him and his personal training business at:

The Power of Words and Thoughts with Sheila Tober

The Power of Words and Thoughts with Sheila Tober

Sheila Tober and I talk about a whole bunch of topics from not judging others (or yourself) to giving uplifting messages to others (and yourself). We talk about a bunch of other health-related topics with the core idea that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to health, that it is important to look at each person as an individual.

Sheila Tober is a physician assistant. She helps each of her patients to better understand their body and the factors that impact it. She first makes sure to take the step of listening to them, understanding how they feel and what their goals are. She believes it is very important to understand those things before making assumptions and giving very specific advice. She also happens to be the wife of the previous episode’s guest, Nick Tober. It was really great to get to talk to both of them and release their episodes back to back!

    ---

(02:21) About Sheila, professionally and personally.

(07:26) Messaging and the power of words.

(10:14) Listening to and understanding a patient’s goals.

    (11:24) Non-judgement.

(13:21) How to find a nutritional plan.

    (20:20) Drinking calories.

(23:03) Impact of sleep and stress on health and weight.

    (28:54) Your most valuable asset.

(30:18) Productivity vs living an enjoyable and healthy life.

    (32:53) Hydration.

(33:24) Exercise should not be your primary means of weight loss.

    (34:06) Willpower.

(35:37) Don’t let the foods you eat or your weight define you.

Getting Down to Business with Nick Tober

Getting Down to Business with Nick Tober

Nick Tober and I talk about the challenges of working a desk job, remaining accountable but forgiving, and a whole bunch more.

Nick Tober has been a mentor and friend of mine for about five years. We met when he took over as advisor for an entrepreneurship club that I was a part of in College. He introduced me to investing and works for a bank. Seems like a weird fit for a health podcast right? Actually no. Health is a very human thing. An individual thing. Something that I think everyone can provide some form of insight about through their ideas and stories, regardless of whether or not they are an “expert” or an “average joe” as Nick calls himself. Despite his main expertise being business, Nick has a lot of valuable information about health and fitness running through his head, and he was kind enough to share some of it with you and me.

    ---

(03:01) Why I asked Nick on the show.

    (05:19) About Nick.

(08:13) Challenges faced working a desk job.

(09:36) Balancing the challenges of a desk job.

(12:03) Knowing if you are truly hungry.

(14:28) We are our own harshest critics.

(16:18) No one best diet for everyone.

(17:23) Nick’s recent experience with fitness.

    (21:35) The importance of experimentation.

    (22:44) Accountability.

    (25:48) Verbalizing thoughts.

    (27:31) Being an “Average Joe”.

(31:53) Knowing your “why” and allowing it to change.

    Mischief Managed with Jordan Syatt

    Mischief Managed with Jordan Syatt

Jordan Syatt and I discuss a whole host of health-related topics. There's also some fun talk about Harry Potter, wizards, and unicorns!

Jordan Syatt is a personal trainer, retired world-record powerlifter, and jiu-jitsu newb. He’s also a wizard (not really, but I hear he has a thing for Dumbledore). He is a proponent of functional but strategic dieting and has made a name for himself in the industry, not only as the personal trainer of Gary Vaynerchuk, but as a hard-working, honest, and caring coach who is always there to support and inspire his clients. It was an honor to get to speak with Jordan as he has played a big role in shaping my thoughts on health and fitness as of late; he even managed to shift my mindset a bit during this episode, so look forward to that! You can check out his podcasts (yes, multiple podcasts) and find him on all of the socials:

(02:32) How Jordan began his fitness journey.

    (05:27) Calorie deficit.

(07:17) Why you should consider more than just the calorie deficit.

    (08:45) Big Mac Challenge.

    (13:53) Flexible vs strategic dieting.

(15:31) Taking control of your nutrition.

(16:40) How Jordan assesses a new client’s exercise needs.

(18:40) Strength training doesn’t have to be in the gym.

(19:40) How important is enjoying exercise?

    (23:25) Changing things up.

    (28:23) “The proverbial white belt”.

    (29:41) Ice hockey.

    (33:26) The benefits of walking.

    (37:12) Dumbledore and unicorns.

(40:06) Closing - How to get in contact with Jordan

    ---

A correction I would like to make is that Jarome Iginla’s finger (not thumb) almost got chopped off. So search “Jarome Iginla finger” if you are interested in seeing the grotesqueness.

Also, while the goalie Clint Malarchuk did survive his neck being cut open by a skate, he did go on to struggle with suicidal thoughts and two more near death experiences. I encourage you to read about it here: https://bit.ly/3ijq4TJ
