With a deep-rooted passion for the outdoors, Mike is an avid bowhunter who constantly strives to refine his skills and pursue excellence in his craft. When he’s not fulfilling his military duties, you’ll find him hunting, fishing, or training for his next backcountry adventure. Over the years, Mike has honed his expertise and developed a genuine love for sharing his knowledge with others, becoming an inspiring teacher for hunters of all experience levels. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Mike has overcome a deeply personal struggle with alcohol and addiction. With unwavering determination, he has been sober for over 900 days. In this episode, Mike opens up about his journey toward sobriety, offering a raw and compelling story of resilience, personal growth, and redemption. His experiences not only shape his life in the outdoors but also fuel his desire to help others who may be facing similar challenges. Kate’s research journey began with a focus on respiratory neurophysiology, later expanding into redox biology, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and inflammatory diseases. Inspired by personal experience and a deep connection to the military community, she transitioned from academia to industry, ultimately founding Coruna Medical—a company developing innovative medical solutions for combat and austere environments. Recognizing the complex physical, mental, and emotional challenges faced by military and first responder communities, Kate pursued additional training in coaching, psychedelic integration, addiction recovery, and functional medicine. She also explored spirituality, theology, and philosophy to provide a holistic approach to healing. An avid outdoorswoman and conservationist, Kate spends her free time exploring the Rocky Mountains, reading, or planning her next adventure over a strong cup of coffee..     Mercedes Siegle Gaither - Professional Trail Runner, Ultra Marathon Runner, High-Endurance Athlete, and Biologist. Mercedes is a high-endurance athlete specializing in trail ultra-marathons and backcountry backpacking. She grew up in a small town, where her love for the outdoors first took root. Mercedes earned a BS in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, during which she studied symbiotic relationships in Belize and plant ecology and management in Australia at the University of Newcastle-Callaghan. She went on to complete an MS in Forestry at Mississippi State University. Following graduation, Mercedes worked with the Bureau of Land Management in Wyoming and Colorado before becoming the Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator for the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture. Later, she returned to Colorado to serve as a Wildlife Biology Technician with the Southwest Conservation Corps and the Bureau of Land Management in Cañon City, CO. In 2023 and 2024, Mercedes worked as a Forester for the Colorado State Forest Service, where she focused on educating landowners about wildfire mitigation, enhancing wildlife habitats, and promoting forest stewardship. In early 2024, she paused her biology career to focus full-time on her well-established career as a professional trail runner, competing in ultra-marathon races worldwide.
