The health care field presents many opportunities for artificial intelligence to improve medical research and development, and the technology is being used in a range of fields – from daily operations to drug discovery. While AI is certainly not going to replace doctors anytime soon, it can certainly help make their work much easier. That alone makes AI in healthcare well worth exploring.

AI is an umbrella term used to describe machines that can make their own decisions. Currently, it is mainly used in computers, but it will soon be a part of our everyday lives with the advent of Google Glass, driverless cars and the Apple Watch. There are already many ways this technology can be implemented into our health care system, as well as the home environment. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the regulation of this technology to ensure it will not be abused and cause harm.

So is AI really ready to deliver on the hype and solve many of the world's biggest challenges, as some have suggested? Perhaps. For now, though, even its best proponents are quick to admit that it is still in its infancy. No matter how big-picture or futuristic our thinking has become, AI will likely continue to advance slowly. One major issue that remains to be solved: training algorithms to work on human data calls for an unprecedented level of data collection. Its true breakthroughs may only occur when we gather more diverse data types for its application, a task that will be both time-consuming and costly.
