Back to Basics: Civil Rights Movement Back to Basics

    • Education

Welcome to Back to Basics a student led podcast focused on introducing you to the basics of life and beyond. We delve into the history of the civil rights movement, black inventors, authors, dancers and more. Enjoy!

Here I will be including some of my personal favourite black creators, books and podcasters to deepen your knowledge on the black civil rights movement.

Political:

"So you want to talk about race" by Ijeoma Oluo ~ This New York Times bestseller talks about how we, as a society and as individuals should address race. Incredible read in my opinion.

"Good Ancestor Podcast" hosted by Layla F. Saad ~ This podcast focuses on enlightening interviews with change makers and culture shapers.

"blackfeministfuture" on instagram ~ BFF is a "movement incubator focused on the dynamic possibilities of galvanizing the power of Black feminisms as a blueprint for liberation."

"How to be a antiracist" by Ibram X. Kendi ~ This novel focuses on different concepts of racism as well as Kendi's own proposals for anti racist actions both personal and systemic.

Non political:

"blackforager" by Alexis Nikole on instagram ~ Alexis shows you how to identify and prepare different edible wild plants. Her recipes are vegan and include treats such as magnolia cookies, one of my personal favourites.

"iamtabithabrown" by Tabitha Brown on tiktok ~ Tabitha specializes in vegan cooking along with her show, "All Love" a vegan cooking show. She is also credited with being "tiktok's mom". I find her account very relaxing and enjoyable.

"trendycurvy" by Kristen on tiktok ~ Mrs Kristen's account focuses on plus size fashion and lifestyle tips. If you are looking for trendy fashion advice, plus size outfits and some vlogging content, this is the place.
