Why am I making a podcast? The best answer I can come up with is that I feel like I’ve been failing my entire life, so I can speak from plenty of experience. Sure, I was on The X Files and Californication, I wrote some books and made some music. But I also got a literal F in The New York Times. I had a high-profile divorce and a magical mystery tour through rehab. So now I want to get into the way that failure looms over all of us and really shapes who we are. What’s good about that, what’s bad about that, what’s holding us back in shame? Lots to unpack here. So join me and some cool guests from sports, tv, politics, business and beyond starting May 7, wherever you get your podcasts – and we’ll get into it.

Patric Gagne and the Art of Sociopathic Zen

Patric Gagne and the Art of Sociopathic Zen

When I first heard about Patric Gagne, a diagnosed sociopath with a buzzy new memoir, I was intrigued. If she lives without the social emotions that often hold us back — embarrassment, jealousy, and shame — does she actually have a superpower? What can she teach us about failure, and does she fear it like the rest of us do? After tearing through her book, I sat down to discuss these big questions, bust the tired tropes, and learn about the Zen of sociopathy.

PREMIUM: A Dog Tale, from Patric Gagne

PREMIUM: A Dog Tale, from Patric Gagne

This week I’m sharing an exchange from my conversation with the author Patric Gagne. She describes extending a helping hand to a stranger and his dog — and what this interaction taught her.

Stephen Dubner and the Joy of Quitting

Stephen Dubner and the Joy of Quitting

Stephen Dubner, host of Freakonomics Radio, has done more than change the way we think about economics — I consider him a spiritual guide of our time. But for all his success, he’s got a laundry list of careers he’s left behind, from rising-star musician to New York Times writer. We debate the merits of expecting the worst versus hoping for the best and discuss how to trade nuance for novelty as we get older. It’s never too late to keep learning — or, according to him, to start a podcast.

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Stephen Dubner

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Stephen Dubner

I left this interview with more questions than usual, which might be because it was one of the interviews I felt most relaxed in. We got off-script at points, so here are all the things I’m still wondering about, including the potential relevance of yet another German word.

Sarah Silverman and the Stupid, Shitty Things You’ve Done

Sarah Silverman and the Stupid, Shitty Things You’ve Done

On stage and off, Sarah Silverman is always evolving, whether that’s honing her standup routines or coming to grips with missteps in her past material. We reminisce about our mutual friend Garry Shandling, including the comedy star-studded basketball games he used to host, where I first met Sarah. I also have the pleasure of talking to Sarah about the satisfaction of apologies and the struggle of forgiveness, and I realize, once again, that I extend much more grace to others than I do to myself. Lucky for me, Sarah won’t stand for that.

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Sarah Silverman

    PREMIUM: Reflections on Sarah Silverman

If you’ve ever wanted to hear me go on a Google goose chase, this is the Premium episode for you. After my conversation with Sarah, I go looking for the German (or French) word that explains that phenomenon of thinking of a retort or question too late — which, as I’m sure you know, I have a lot of.

Best Voice in the Business

Always wondered if Fox Mulder’s dry, self-effacing wit was FM or DD. As a long time fan, David’s voice is as familiar as that of an old friend. Except that friend has tuned that voice and the cadence of his words into a beautiful instrument.
An instrument is nothing without a heart and mind. He’s excellent at drawing a flowing narrative out of his guests.
Listening out of order, I was surprised to find the Ben Stiller interview was the first, it was that good. Added Zoolander to my IMDb watchlist after listening. More please.

Excellent thought provoking

Love this podcast. Unpretentious, always thoughtful, gives you something to think about.

Love it

Changing my perspective on failure and self growth. I am a big fan of autobiography so I love the personalized perspectives that you get from each guest. The south reflection at the end of each episodes are interesting and I really do hope you bring back at least half your guests so far to ask some of those questions. Keep it up.
