Hi everyone, my name is Andy (ND for short) and I am a photographer/videographer turned medical student at the Medical College of Georgia seeking to share stories, teach others, and maybe inspire someone along the way. Giving you the unfiltered view of what it's like to be a med student while trying to have a little fun in the process.

During this show, we will interview medical students, practitioners, and professionals about the things that make up their life that are "Beyond the Scope" of their typical responsibilities. We'll cover topics like marriage in medical school, managing extracurriculars, building your resume, and more!

Mental Health and the Medicine in Media: A Conversation with Dr. Jake Goodman

Mental Health and the Medicine in Media: A Conversation with Dr. Jake Goodman

Welcome to the Beyond the Scope Podcast presented by ND MD. This podcast continues the mission of sharing the incredible stories and experiences of students, physicians, and healthcare professionals...but this time it's all about the things all those years of medical training doesn't prepare you for. Things that are beyond the scope of our practice.

As we roll in the new year, and myself and Tyler begin to reflect on how to balance creativity and medicine once again as a resident doctor. Joined by the one and only Dr. Jake Goodman, this conversation dives deep into one of the most taboo topics in medicine, mental health. In 2024 and beyond, our hope is that the stories we share, and experiences you face, and support around you encourages you to always say AND, not OR. Happy new year everyone, and I will see you all soon again in this closing chapter of medical school :)

One of my favorite episodes of this whole podcast, Dr. Laura Vater, a GI oncologist and talented writer regarding medical student and resident wellness breaks down some of the ways medical training has changed and must change for the better. Somehow I ended up being a case study in this episode as this is a very much "do as I say, not as I do" story since I recorded this only a couple hours after arriving back home from a redeye cross country flight.

    BONUS EPISODE WITH DR KAY

Today we put the spotlight on a topic near and dear to my heart, the imperfections of becoming a doctor. I always mention that medical training is difficult in my interviews and I always ask my guests if they would change anything that got them to where they are today...and almost unanimously the answer is no. Dr. Kay is a huge physician advocate and uses her platform to normalize some of the difficulties we all experience as we seek to pour into our patients..while struggling to sometimes pour into ourselves.

Things that are beyond the scope of our practice.

Today we put the spotlight on primary care with Dr. Cheung, a resident in the primary care track at UCLA medical center. An underrated and under appreciated field, this was an incredibly informative conversation about the intimate impact you can have in this set of specialties as well as how financial hardship and opportunities can impact how you shape your medical training path.

Today ventures somewhat away from the mission of talking about things not taught in medical school because med school DEFINITELY teaches you this stuff (or should). My personal mentor during my USMLE Step 1 and 2CK dedicated studying, Dr. Rahul Damania aka HyGuru joins me on this episode to break down some practice med school board exam questions for each other shelf topics. Listen and practice along to see if you can get them all right!

Really good content with open and transparent doctors. I enjoyed the "it's never too late to become a doctor" episode.
