493 episodes

After 25 years at the Late Night desk, Conan realized that the only people at his holiday party are the men and women who work for him. Over the years and despite thousands of interviews, Conan has never made a real and lasting friendship with any of his celebrity guests. So, he started a podcast to do just that. Deeper, unboundedly playful, and free from FCC regulations, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend is a weekly opportunity for Conan to hang out with the people he enjoys most and perhaps find some real friendship along the way.

People…please stop hating on Sona!

I hate how people say that Sona’s laugh is forced or fake. Come on people. If you sat with Conan, would you have to force a laugh?? Didn’t think so! I LOVE Conan, Sona, and Matt. I laugh out loud all of the time. On my worst day, this show lifts me up. I feel like I am listening to down to earth people who are being themselves. So all you haters need to start laughing and stop complaining. Do not change a thing about this show!!! Love it!!!

The fake laughter is too much. It's killing the show.

Just paused an episode to write this — I can't take it anymore, and it seems a number of recent reviewers feel the same: Sona's painfully forced laughter has far exceeded whatever value someone originally thought it might offer and is now (as it has been for the past year or so) extremely irritating & grating. It's bad, guys. I actively dread it, wincing at its onset and through its seemingly interminable duration — far beyond what is humanly possible to find THAT funny for THAT long, not to mention that often. It completely distracts from whatever else is going on. When Conan or a guest hits it with the wit (the laughter in question is notably absent at Matt Gourley's occasional zingers) it makes the thought process go from "this is funny" to "...wait, is it really THAT funny?" It feels disrespectful to whichever special guest is on, some of whom also seem annoyed by it (kudos to Larry David & others who have tried to politely call it out...for every 1 Larry there are 100 behind him secretly thinking the same thing). It's embarrassing for everyone. Having listened to the pod from its inception, it didn't used to be like this – I was originally wary of Sona's inclusion before eventually warming to her. But something's changed over time, transforming what was once a soothing aural balm to just plain aggravating (and, as we say on the street, cringe). I don't know if someone is putting Sona up to this or what. Is it Conan's doing? Laugh tracks are universally reviled amongst the youths, jsyk. Matt Gourley, you seem like an old-fashioned guy who takes pride in his work, a true man of the people...so if you're reading this...please find a clever way to make it stop (for your own job security if not for the poor guests and listeners). I am very sorry it's taken this turn.
