Conan on Conan, basically, directed at random guest

Don’t want to be a hater, but I agree with the other reviewers on here who pointed out that Conan has a tendency to talk at, rather than to, his guests. The Bowen Yang episode was indeed really frustrating and awkward to listen to for this reason. You can sort of track the moment when Bowen realizes that that the interview is really going to be all about Conan and politely shifts gears to accommodate this. Mind of a bummer because I was very curious to learn more about this guest and I feel like we barely learned anything.

Rather than getting Bowen to open up, which he was clearly ready to do, Conan keeps cutting him short to turn the conversation back to himself or otherwise go on for an extended period of time about how he perceives Bowen, which truly makes up like 50% of the episode. There’s kind of a manic quality to it all, and I suspect Conan picked up this habit hosting late night for so long and thinks he needs to constantly steer the ship in these conversations, not realizing that his guests are normal adults with social skills and that a far more normal (outward-focused, relaxed, and inquisitive approach) would create much better long-form content.

Anyway, hope he or someone else involved reads this because Conan is a funny person and the guests he’s able to book are too-tier. Just wishing it didn’t disappoint every time I try to give it a chance.
