Boston Breakthrough: Grant O'Connor
In the spring of 2023, RPI graduate Grant O’Connor crossed the finishing line of the Jersey City Marathon in 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 28 seconds. It was a bittersweet breakthrough, a big personal best, but an agonizing 28 seconds outside of the Olympic Trials qualification standard.
O’Connor put that disappointment firmly behind him on Marathon Monday, as he crossed the iconic Boston Marathon finish line in 2:16:17, finishing 19th overall, and 5th amongst Americans.
In this episode, we take some time to dive into Grant’s latest performance and his marathon trajectory up to this point. We learn that Grant isn’t surprised to be where he is now, but the ’18 Outdoor 5k Champ thought he might be here a little sooner. What’s kept him in the game? The ability to navigate the highs and lows of a sport that is also very much a lifestyle, and the capacity to run big mileage.
What does it take to be great? For Grant it’s an easy answer: Put on the running shoes every 12 hours, year after year.

Sam Blaskowski: Breaking Barriers 9.99w
"I have this little chip on my shoulders. Like, why can't I get let into these meets? I'm going to keep going. I know I'm not like with those guys, right? I'm not running 20. 2 and 9.9, wind legal yet, but I feel like I can go there and compete with these guys if I like am given the opportunity."
Sam Blaskowski comes back onto the podcast to go over his big weekend running 9.99w (+5.5). He becomes the first D3 man to go under 10s in All-Conditions and is at the top of the All-Conditions leaderboard.
As always, Sam brings excitement to his most recent feat and fills us in on the emotion of the weekend.
He talks about the internet response of him going 9.99w and the struggles of getting into big meets despite his strong resume.
He knows the body has done it before so he has confidence that one day he can run close to this time in a wind legal setting.

From D3 to Pro: Matt Wilkinson
Last time we saw Matt Wilkinson, he was preparing for the D3 National Meet.
Now he's in his first Pro season with Under Armour's Dark Sky team in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Before he got to Flagstaff, he had a few seasons at Minnesota where he swept the Steeple and 5k at the Big 10 conference meet.
He talks about how he's handled each transition from D3 to D1 to Pro and how he's overcoming his imposter syndrome with each race.
With each step in the journey he's embraced his new teammates that he trains with and gains confidence knowing he can hang with them in workouts.
As he prepares for the Olympic Trials, he's excited to see what a full year of training with his UA team can have on his performance.
Matt is running for the long haul. He expects to have a long career that will have him on the roads after track.
