#EmpathytoImpact
Episode Summary How might we build empathy for people who are forced to move from their home and settle in a new place? How might we create a sense of belonging for refugees? These were the types of questions presented to 9th grade students at Western Academy of Beijing as part of an integrated unit involving a partnership between Design and Individuals & Societies (I&S). Students became more aware of the push and pull factors that lead to migration and the challenges that these pose to people having to relocate in different parts of the world. They then used their knowledge and skills to design solutions to help refugees feel a sense of belonging in their new homes. -

Episode SummaryOn this episode I explore the power of storytelling with a specific focus on migration stories in our local communities. To help me unpack this, I am joined by four students who (at the time of recording) just finished 7th grade at the International School of Bangkok. Maggie, Mira, Pammy and Kanan learned about migration like many 7th graders across the globe, but their experience was a little bit different. They also learned about active listening, interview skills, and how do use their critical thinking skills to create videos to share migration stories from their own community. -

Episode Summary
On this episode I meet 3 seniors from BCIS in Beijing, Wallington, Tom and Hower, and I was absolutely blown away by the work they are doing at their school. They run a circuit club for students to learn about technology. They have developed apps that is used by their school for extracurricular activities and internal communications for announcements and upcoming events and also they are prototyping a solar power system that could eventually be expanded to power their entire campus. They even started their own company, Walteromtya, which you can learn more about in the show notes below. Throughout all of this they continue to learn and grow as a team and are committed to building a stronger community at their school. The BCIS mission is to challenge and empower students to be compassionate and inspired people, who act for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world. These gentlemen are certainly living that mission. -
