Roberto Bolaño's Malevolent Powers: A Discussion on Literary Realism and Geopolitics (Part I)

    [Recorded on January 22, 2024]
Longtime friend, ATEOH supporter and commentator of Latin American politics, Pat Cabell, joins us for a discussion on the great Chilean novelist, Robert Bolaño, and his work's relevance to themes of realism, international relations and revolutionary politics.  Drawing from an array of texts including 2666, By Night in Chile  and Distant Star and the works of Frederic Jameson and Guy Debord, Pat guides us through an exploration of the Chilean master's key thematic elements, including the persistence of fascist violence, the vanishing of socialist utopianism and its replacement by transnational narco-narratives. What is the longer historic pattern Bolaño's work fits within?

Excellent analysis!

Starting from their politicization in opposition to the Iraq war & continuing through their total dissatisfaction with the American Left, the two hosts chart out a wonderful & powerful analysis of modern world, geopolitical events that mixes realism, leftism, and other modern day analysis. They play all the bangers, Lenin, Perry Anderson, John Mearsheimer, and others! Definitely worth listening to their stuff & supporting on Patreon

Definitely on the shortlist of podcasts I recommend… and I’ve explored far too many podcasts. I’m always excited to see new episodes in my feed. Tom and Mario are awesome!
