오늘은 치킨무에 대해서 이야기해보고자 해요.

한국 드라마가 전세계적으로 유행하면서 한국식 치킨을 아는 사람들이 많아졌어요. 한국식 치킨은 Fried Chicken을 말하는데요 우리나라가 한국전쟁을 치루고, 주한미군이 한국에 주둔하면서 미국식 Fried Chicken이 한국에 전해졌습니다. 이것이 발전하고 한국 사람들의 입맛에 맞게 발전한 것이 바로 한국식 치킨입니다.

그런데, 한국에서 치킨을 시키면, 반드시 함께 오는 것이 있습니다. 바로 치킨 무인데요. 치킨 무는 한국 아니면 찾아보기 힘든 음식입니다. 무를 네모로 잘라서 식초와 사카린으로 절인 음식이예요. 아삭아삭하고, 새콤한 맛을 가지고 있어서 기름으로 튀긴 치킨의 느끼한 맛을 잘 중화해줍니다. 그리고 입맛을 좋게 하기도 합니다.

외국에서 비슷한 음식을 찾아본다면 코울슬로, 샐러드, 피클이 있는데 비슷한 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있어요. 그런데 한국인인 저로서는 치킨무의 아삭아삭함을 따라오는 음식은 없는 것 같습니다.

While similar foods like coleslaw, salad, and pickles can be found abroad, they don't quite match the crispiness of chicken radish pickle. As a Korean, I believe there's nothing quite like it.

먼저 귤은 원래는 생산량이 많지 않아서 왕족들만 먹을 수 있는 과일이었다고 해요.
그런데, 1980년대 이후 우리나라 제주도를 중심으로 귤 농업 기술이 발전하면서 생산량이 급속도로 늘어났고, 그 이후에 겨울을 대표하는 과일이 되었습니다.

딸기도 겨울에 많이 생산되는 과일입니다. 원래 자연 상태에서 딸기의 제철은 여름이라고 해요. In natural state, scientists say that strawberry is a summer fruit.

그러나 딸기가 대부분 시설 재배로 이루어진 이후에는, 농부들이 경쟁 과일이 적은 겨울 시장을 집중 공략하면서 딸기가 겨울에 많이 나오게 되었다고 하네요.

특히 겨울에는 우리나라 날씨 특성상 일조량이 많아서 당도가 최대로 올라가며 병충해가 없어 딸기 키우기가 매우 수월하다고 합니다.

오늘은 한국의 배달 서비스 문화에 대해 이야기해보고자 합니다.

한국의 인구 밀도는 높기 때문에 예전부터 탕, 냉면, 국밥, 비빔밥 등을 자전거로 배달해주던 문화가 있습니다. 시간이 지나면서 배달부의 이동수단이 자전거에서 오토바이로 진화했고 배달방식 또한 여러 단계를 거치면서 진화했습니다.


1980년대부터는 대형 아파트 단지가 많아지면서 배달 음식점이 증가했고, 짜장면과 피자, 치킨을 중심으로 배달음식 문화가 발달했습니다. 아파트 단지는 많은 사람들이 모여 사는 것을 의미하기 때문에, 배달하기에 매우 유리한 환경이 만들어진 것이기 때문입니다.

어플이 없었던 예전에는, 전화로 배달을 주문했습니다. 따라서 옛날 한국 영화를 보면, “짜장면 시키신분~?”이라고 외치는 배달부의 모습을 자주 볼 수 있습니다.

스마트폰을 통한 어플리케이션 주문이 발달한 이후의 배달문화에는 몇 가지 특징이 있습니다.

첫째, 배달 어플리케이션에는 실시간으로 리뷰가 쌓이기 때문에 “리뷰 이벤트” 문화가 발달되어 있습니다. 좋은 리뷰를 받고 싶은 사장님들이, 리뷰를 기록하면 이벤트로 사이드 메뉴나 음료를 무료로 제공하는 이벤트를 하기 시작했습니다.

둘째, 배달비를 따로 받기 시작했습니다. 사실, 배달 어플리케이션이 발달하기 이전에는, 배달료는 음식값에 포함된 것이었습니다. 따라서 배달비를 따로 지불하지 않았었는데, 이제는 치킨, 짜장면 등 전통적인 배달음식점에서도 배달비를 지불합니다.

셋째, 코로나19 이후에는, 비대면 배달이 주류가 되었습니다. 서로 만나면, 감염이 될 수 있기 때문에 배달부가 문 앞에 음식을 놓고 띵동~하고 벨을 누르는 것이 표준이 된 것입니다.
