-
Recorded class lectures from Peter Beyersdorf's Physics 158 (Modern Optics) class at San Jose State University from the Spring of 2008. Recordings will be added twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
-
Modulators
We look at the behavior of electrooptic devices as amplitude and phase modulators.
-
Birefringence
We look at birefringence in crystals and discuss optical activity and the Faraday effect.
-
Polarization of light
We look at the vectorial nature of light and describe polarization in terms of Jones vectors
-
Diffraction from Double Slits
Diffraction from a double slit is discussed. The convolution theorem is presented and the grating equation is derived. (incomplete)
-
More Diffraction
We look at the relationship between far-field (Fraunhofer) diffraction and the Fourier transform, and explore the diffraction pattern of a uniformly illuminated circular aperture, which leads to the Rayleigh criterion for resolution in an optical system
-
Diffraction
We look at Fraunhofer diffraction from a slit and for a Gaussian beam. We use Huygen's principle and also discuss Babinet's principle

An Excellent, Informative Presentation
This is a straightforward yet comprehensive course on the physics of light and optics with a foundation in EM theory. Well-taught, the concepts are readily grasped from the lecture even without the benefit of the course text or video of blackboard notes. The subject matter includes both theory and practice, including introductions to important and useful devices.
This podcast is especially well-suited to new students, with some episodes quite useful to the experienced professional who wishes to conveniently and quickly review basic details of specific subjects in this field.
At the time this review was written, the video episode (lecture) on the Wave Equation was missing audio; whatever could be done to fix this problem would be most welcome.
Great Review!
Instructor is able to present complex topics and break them down into easy to digest pieces. He then builds them back up with the appropriate math. I've been listening as I commute to work - his narrative is easy to follow, even without video of the chalkboard.
