Jello Uber Alles
As a lifelong DKs fan and always amused by Jello’s late-in-life undertakings, I subscribed to his new podcast to see if he could manage to wrangle in his self-centered stream-of-consciousness ramblings to actually interview (or even have a semblance of a discussion with) his guests. Nope. The Fred Armisen episode is a hilarious, if frustrating, example. Two hours going down unrelated and meaningless rabbit holes. Trying to trace his deviation after deviation is like a 19th century explorer attempting to map out the thousands of tributaries in the Amazon River. Fred displays incredible politeness and patience as he tolerates JB’s incredible lack of self awareness and uninformed questions.
What *should* Jello do? My recommendation to the host is to focus your questions on your guests and your areas of alignment with them. i.e., punk. (For example, your fumbling “questions” to Fred about his comedy and acting career were so basic as to both bore your audience and reveal your ignorance. Scanning the guest’s Wikipedia page as you give them 10 seconds to actually get a word in, doesn’t make for an enlightening interview.)
You know what? I take my criticisms back. With so many identical podcasts with identical guests asking identical questions, Jello’s deranged ramblings are a breath of fresh rotting vegetables. Don’t change a thing. 5 stars!
Renegade ramblings
As a DK fan, and Jello fan he does quite a but of renegade rambling, and doesn’t stick with focusing on his guests. He has too many sidetracks of thought and talking about himself…I’m sure he’ll improve his medium as time goes by, but it’s still rough around the edges.
Who is the interviewer?
I love Jello, but I thought he was going to interview his guests on this podcast. Instead, the guests are listening to Jello interview himself. Fred Armisen barely speaks during his episode.
