Zoë Routh Expert of the PEOPLE STUFF in businesses #118

Zoë Routh Expert of the PEOPLE STUFF in businesses #118

Zoë Routh is one of Australia’s leading experts on leadership. She specialises in the people stuff – the stuff that gets in our way of producing results, and the stuff that lights us up. She believes developing perspectives is the gateway to better decisions and greater results.

    About Zoe (from her website)

    “I love the PEOPLE STUFF.

I am obsessed with answering this question:

Why can’t we just get along?

I believe that with a little more compassion and understanding, the world would be a better place.

I’m not so naïve to think that this is easy. People Stuff is HARD. I’m on a mission to demystify it, to give leaders practical maps and tools to make people stuff the best stuff of leadership.

I work with leaders and organisations who believe this one thing: people matter. We get to work on making the people stuff great.

Who I am, where I’ve been.

I have had two great passions in my career: people and wilderness adventures. I’ve managed to combine these two in all roles that I have played.

I led canoe trips for the YM-YWCA Winnipeg for 9 glorious summers. The canoe trips ranged from 2 to 6 weeks. Small groups, spectacular scenery, profound experiences.

I hopped across the pond and landed at Outward Bound Australia where I made this my home for the next ten years. I was an expedition leader, set up the staff training program (which won numerous awards), and was part of the executive. Big operations, big responsibilities, and big changes. I learned a lot about myself as a human being and leader. Life-changing.

I joined the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation after that to design and deliver leadership programs for various industries. All of them included deep, powerful outdoor experiential programs that shifted people’s understanding of themselves as people and as leaders. A privilege to be part of this team. Humbling.

Other bits about me: I am a telemark skier (cross-country and downhill hybrid), I’ve run six marathons, I love my backyard chooks. I had cancer in 2005. It changed how I thought about myself and life and work. I am fiercely committed to leaders looking after themselves properly as a result.

My core values are FUN, ADVENTURE, AND LEARNING.

I love chocolate and gin, I don’t have a musical bone in my body, and parking in underground parking lots freaks me out. I cook a mean apple crumble and have a fascination with the history of the English monarchy. I believe Ryan Reynolds is one of Canada’s greatest exports.:

Space Propulsion Startup Co-Founders Marcus and Manuel #117

Space Propulsion Startup Co-Founders Marcus and Manuel #117

“Neutron Star Systems core focus is the application of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) technology to Electric Propulsion (EP) solutions. Our primary product is the SUPREME thruster; an Applied-Field Magnetoplasmadynamic (AF-MPD) thruster incorporating HTS coils as a key enabling technology.AF-MPD thrusters are a type of electric propulsion for spacecraft. All current spacecraft propulsion systems operate by expelling a reaction mass, which generates an opposing thrust force according to Newton’s 3rd Law of motion. There are two primary types of spacecraft propulsion: Chemical Propulsion, and Electric Propulsion. Unlike chemical systems, EP uses electrical energy to produce thrust, rather than the chemical energy stored in the fuel. As such, electric propulsion systems are only limited by the amount of power available, rather than the limited amount of energy contained in a unit amount of propellant. In other words, they are able to utilise fuel much more efficiently than chemical systems, resulting in lighter spacecraft and reduced costs.ApplicationsThe characteristics of the SUPREME thruster are best suited to missions with heavy payloads which require fast transfers using a highly efficient systems. Some examples of such missions:Near-Earth:• Drag compensation of large structures (e.g. ISS)• Multi-use space vehicles for satellite servicing, satellite orbit raising, refuelling and debris removal.• Space Tourism• Space ManufacturingLunar:• Lunar Gateway Logistics• Lunar Cargo Missions• Lunar Space TugBeyond Earth:• Mars Cargo Missions• Mars Space Tug• Mars Gateway Logistics• Asteroid Mining• Human Exploration”

The Politics with Richard Painter

I just discovered it, and will now listen to all of the episodes. The episode about Barr was clear, informative, and straight to the point. Excellent!

Painful

I tried to listen to episode 66 about Nuchido. The host used the word “like” almost every other word, and instead of asking penetrating questions about the product and formula and testing, he wanted to talk about the scientist’s personal life for half the episode. Painful.

Interesting Range of topics

Lowell finds a wide variety of professionals (mostly entrepreneurs) to discuss topics in medicine, space, and other innovations in science fields. His questions make the advance topics easy to understand even when you are unfamiliar with the technical side of things as well as asking personal questions of the innovators and entrepreneurs so the audience can learn about their struggles and hear their advice.
