Legacy

From Wondery and Goalhanger Podcasts, Afua Hirsch and Peter Frankopan tell the wild stories of some of the most extraordinary men and women ever to have lived – and ask whether they have the rep they deserve. Should Nina Simone’s role in the civil rights movement be more celebrated than it is? When you find out what Picasso got up to in his studio, can you still admire his art? Was Napoleon a hero or a tyrant - or both? (And, while we’re at it, was he even short?) Legacy is the show that looks at big lives from the perspective of now – and doesn’t always like what it sees. Listen to Legacy on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. You can binge episodes early and ad-free on Wondery+. Join Wondery+ in the Wondery App, Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Do you ever think your phone is listening to you? I was skeptical until now. I was talking with my mom wondering why Zimbabwe was once called Rhodesia and the next day this podcast discussing Cecil Rhodes popped up on my feed. I’m so glad it did. I enjoy the banter between to two hosts, their research, and their perspective. Keep up the good work.
JFK
JFK was interesting until last episode. Couldn’t finish it. Instead of “quoting the official report” or saying he was “allegedly” shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, they make that statement of the shooting as if it’s historic fact. It is hotly contested for many reasons, and has been debunked by some of the best research. (Not to mention the famous video showing the fatal shot coming from the front. Or the lack of gunshot residue on Oswald when tested) Hard to breeze over something like that when covering JFK. Saying Oswald shot him in the context of fact is disrespectful to the historic significance of this event. As an American, that event forever split this country. Us against the government. Because people are unwilling to recognize the obvious issues with historically accusing someone who not only was videotaped saying he was a patsy, but never had a trial. (Alongside mountains of tangible evidence supporting his innocence) We believe in justice in this country. And JFK didn’t get it. There was not a trial. He was never proved guilty, let’s keep that in mind as a starting point. Innocent until. In whatever fairness I can offer the presenters, I didn’t finish the episode.
Wanted to love it, but can’t

I enjoy history, but this is just “oh here are my personal politics” with a little history mixed in. I tried multiple seasons and it’s outrageous throughout. If that’s the type of show a host wants, by all means, go ahead. My issue here is that this show is presented very differently from what the listening experience actually is.
Biased & untrustworthy hosts
Sep 20
I struggle to find these hosts credible because their arguments seem biased and reductive. They make sweeping generalizations that oversimplify complex issues, which undermines the validity of their perspectives. Suggesting Marilyn Monroe dyed her hair blonde due to an aryan fixation in America and that Taylor Swift’s popularity is based on the fact that she “resembles the American flag” diminishes these women’s achievements and comes off as sexist. I started listening to the Hoover one but couldn’t get through it, these hosts seem so untrustworthy, especially when you hear them talk glowingly about Thatcher. It seems to be a reoccurring theme in British podcasting that they tend to avoid any self reflection instead often pushing strange, hateful claims on the US and its citizens without citing any sources.
