Hi, I’m Dax Shepard, and I love talking to people. I am endlessly fascinated by the messiness of being human, and I find people who are vulnerable and honest about their struggles and shortcomings to be incredibly sexy. I invite you to join me as I explore other people’s stories. We will celebrate, above all, the challenges and setbacks that ultimately lead to growth and betterment. What qualifies me for such an endeavor? More than a decade of sobriety, a degree in Anthropology and four years of improv training. I will attempt to discover human “truths” without any laboratory work, clinical trials or data collection. I will be, in the great tradition of 16th-century scientists, an Armchair Expert.

Just started listening

I just found this podcast and I enjoy it but likely will stop listening because Dax cannot stop interrupting his guests. Let them talk! I felt like the Ashton Kutcher interview was the Dax Shepard interview because Dax dominated the conversation and continually interrupted.

I always listen - but always skip the ads.

Too many ads! Take the Marc Maron approach, and put the ads at the start, and get it over with! Plus, the ads are long! Over two minutes, spread throughout the episode several times. I’m not sure many of us are going to buy a Chrysler Pacifica, but keep on trying, Dax! ;)

CONS (sorta): You can tell the podcast is heavily edited for dead air, and to speed-up the pace, that’s not bad... but can feel robotic at times. I totally think Monica is sweet, and adds a great ‘devil’s advocate’ to Dax’s opinions, but her vocal fry is insane!! ‘C’mon! Sometimes I think it’s a parody of a typical ‘vocal fryer.’ I def can’t listen with my earbuds.

PROS: The content is always great, and I’m impressed with Dax’s command of vocabulary, and his knowledge of history. He is very humble and thoughtful. Most guests don’t seem like they are on just to promote something, and the conversations are just the right length.
The ‘fact check’ is really cool. You don’t have to listen, obviously, so I don’t think criticizing that portion is valid - it’s at the end, and without any ads. I’ll catch myself correcting Dax sometimes, and it’s usually caught in that segment. The idea of not searching thru the web during the original episode keeps the podcast genuine.

And, finally: the Theme song is the best of any podcast I’ve heard, especially the live versions!!

At first, I was originally going to give this podcast 3 stars, but I listen to it every week, and who has time for 3 star podcasts?! 3 is too low, all things considered, IMHO. I just can’t give 5-stars because of the annoying aspects of the ads and vocal fry, and we do hear a lot of the same personal stories from Dax, but that’s the case with many a great podcaster. (Maron).
It’s a keeper!

I absolutely adore this podcast. It’s authentic, raw, it’s inspiring and it’s healing. This is the kind of stuff we should be talking more about. The complexity of being a human, why we are the way we are and trying not to take ourselves to seriously .
