RJ Davis / Jalen Washington are back! | Ian Jackson re-affirms UNC commitment | Will Shaver transfers | Eric Montross battling cancer

There was a rash of North Carolina basketball roster news over the weekend. What was intended to be a “Caleb Love: Stay or Go” episode will have to wait til Tuesday. RJ Davis announced his return to UNC for his senior year. Jalen Washington, in commenting on Davis’ post, did the same. Will Shaver announced he’s transferring, and Seth Trimble, in responding appears to have announced he’ll also be back. What does all this mean for Carolina? Host Isaac Schade will update that!

In commit news – class of 2024 UNC commit Ian Jackson put fears to rest on Friday by re-affirming his commitment to Carolina over any advances from Rick Pitino, the new head coach of St. John’s. Additionally, 2024 big man James Brown announced his intention to transfer to Link Academy in Branson, MO, where he will team up with fellow Tar Heel commit Elliot Cadeau.

STAY or GO?: RJ Davis | Are the rumors true about Ian Jackson & St. John's? | Kennedy Todd-Williams transfers

STAY or GO?: RJ Davis | Are the rumors true about Ian Jackson & St. John's? | Kennedy Todd-Williams transfers

RJ Davis just finished his junior year for the Tar Heels and along with the rest of the returning starters from last season’s national championship game run, Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, and Leaky Black, fell short of what he was hoping for in terms of team success. Davis’ finger injuries played into that a good bit. Why should RJ Davis return? Why should he leave? Host Isaac Schade provides rationale for both options, ultimately suggestion that the reasons to stay outweigh the reasons to leave but that it’s RJ’s decision.

Ian Jackson has been tied to Rick Pitino since he took the job at St. John’s. Is there any truth to the rumors that Jackson might de-commit?

Armando Bacot is back for year 5 | Puff Johnson moving on | What is means for UNC's roster in 23-24

Armando Bacot is back for year 5 | Puff Johnson moving on | What is means for UNC's roster in 23-24

After a couple weeks of bad news for North Carolina with Justin McKoy, Tyler Nickel, and Dontrez Styles all entering the transfer portal, the Tar Heels and Hubert Davis finally got some good news on Wednesday. After more bad news in the morning with Puff Johnson also deciding to transfer, Armando Bacot announced that he was returning for his fifth year, taking advantage of his COVID eligibility.

We still wait on news from other UNC players such as RJ Davis and Caleb Love, who would each be returning for their senior years.

Following the Bacot and Johnson news, Carolina has four open scholarships to use ahead of the 2023-24 season. The Tar Heels will need shooting to balance out what Bacot brings inside.

Stay or go?: Armando Bacot | Women's basketball falls | Austin O'Connor wins 2nd straight national championship

Stay or go?: Armando Bacot | Women's basketball falls | Austin O'Connor wins 2nd straight national championship

Armando Bacot just finished a stellar four-year career for the University of North Carolina, playing for both Roy Williams and Dean Smith. He’s written his name in the UNC record book multiple times and has endeared himself to the Carolina family. Bacot could stay for one more year and utilize his COVID eligibility.

Host Isaac Schade lays out five reasons Bacot should stay, and five reasons Bacot should go.

The women’s team fell at Ohio St. on Monday afternoon, 71-69, in a gut-wrenching finish that resembled how they won against ST. John’s on Saturday. It was an impressive season for Coach Banghart’s club and that core nucleus of Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Willams, and Alysaa Ustby.

Austin O’connor won his send wrestling national championship over the weekend, women’s lacrosse took their first L of the season at No. 3 Northwestern, and women’s tennis continues to roll right along.

Dontrez Styles enters Transfer Portal | Where does UNC turn? | UNC women win!

Dontrez Styles enters Transfer Portal | Where does UNC turn? | UNC women win!

After Tyler Nickel and Justin McKoy entered the transfer portal earlier in the week, Dontrez Styles joined them on Friday. His decision gives Carolina four open scholarships for next season. Carolina has nine players on scholarship ahead of next season, including RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, D’Marco Dunn, Jalen Washington, Seth Trimble, Will Shaver, Simeon Wilcher, and Zayden High. If Armando Bacot comes back, he would add a 10th and move the scholarship number available down to three.

Carolina are starting to make several inquiries in the transfer portal. The Tar Heels will have an in-home visit this week with Nick Timberlake, the Towson transfer. Carolina has already checked in with Florida transfer Kowacie Reeves. Trentyn Flowers committed to Louisville.

The UNC women won their first game of the NCAA Tournament 61-59 against St. John’s and play Ohio State this afternoon.
