STORY 1: Two Men Get Life for Crime Spree That Left Young Father Dead

In January 2020, Elijah Bailey, 20, and Miguel Romo, 21, were convicted by a Cobb jury for their roles in a violent 48-hour crime spree, including murder, home invasion, armed robbery, among other charges. This spree tragically culminated in the death of 22-year-old Daquan Murphy during one of the home invasions. The spree inflicted terror on multiple victims, notably affecting Murphy's girlfriend and their young child. Shropshire, a fellow accomplice, previously received a life sentence. Bailey and Romo were each sentenced to life imprisonment plus additional years. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady said the community's unequivocal stance against such acts of violence, affirming justice for the impacted families.

STORY 2: Challenger Decries Home Rule, Transit Tax at Cobb Forum

In the race for the District 4 seat on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, incumbent Monique Sheffield and challenger Yashica Marshall, both Democrats, present differing stances. Sheffield supports the commission's home resolution and the proposed transit tax, advocating for specific funding for transit projects. In contrast, Marshall opposes them, suggesting alternative funding sources and emphasizing community input in development plans. Their debate spans issues such as home rule, transit tax funding, and revitalizing Veterans Memorial Highway. Sheffield touts her experience and leadership, while Marshall seeks equitable attention across the county and champions positive change.

STORY 3: Cobb Students Win $2,500 National Merit Scholarship

Eleven graduating high school seniors from Cobb County received $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, chosen from 15,000 finalists nationwide based on academic records, test scores, leadership, community involvement, essays, and recommendations. The nonprofit awarded a total of 2,250 scholarships. Winners from Cobb County include students with diverse career aspirations, from computer science and engineering to medicine and marine biology. These scholars were recognized for their exceptional achievements and potential for success in college studies.

Summer Burn Ban Begins in Cobb

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Monday, May 6th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Summer Burn Ban Begins in Cobb

A burn ban has been initiated in Cobb County to mitigate the effects of pollution and minimize the risk of wildfires. The ban, effective immediately and lasting until September 30, prohibits the open burning of leaves, tree limbs, yard waste, and forest land, along with the use of air curtain destructors for land clearing purposes. However, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has clarified that certain recreational fires, including campfires and grilling, are exempt from this prohibition. Furthermore, the existing year-round restriction on burning household garbage remains in effect. For additional details, Cobb citizens are encouraged to visit epd.georgia.gov.

Candidates for County Chair on Taxes, Spending and Infrastructure

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, May 3rd, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Candidates for County Chair on Taxes, Spending and Infrastructure

The first forum featuring three candidates for the chair of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners was held at Grace City Church, bringing crucial discussions to the forefront. Incumbent Lisa Cupid defended the necessity of a stormwater fee proposal to address the county's infrastructure challenges, underlining her commitment to balancing growth with sustainability. In contrast, both Shelia Edwards and Kay Morgan, Cupid's challengers, expressed their opposition to increased taxes and spending. Morgan, in particular, outlined her critique of Cupid's proposed 30-year transit tax, questioning its timely relevance and impact on the economic well-being of citizens. The overarching themes of the forum included a call for responsible budgeting, the urgency of infrastructure improvements, and fostering economic development partnerships with the state, signaling a pivotal moment in the county's approach to governance and development strategies.

STORY 1: Kennesaw State Students Hold Second Protest for Palestinians Amid Nationwide Demonstrations

Kennesaw State University students conducted their second demonstration supporting Palestinian rights, amidst calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urging the university to divest from companies tied to Israel. This action is in coordination with the Party for Socialism and Liberation in Atlanta. Notably, the protests have adhered to peaceful standards, abiding by university guidelines for unregistered events. A significant march took place through the campus, with university police providing traffic control without direct intervention. The student organizers, while focusing current efforts on supporting their counterparts at Emory University facing arrest, hinted at possible encampments during KSU’s upcoming commencement. University officials are yet to comment. This protest is part of a larger wave of campus demonstrations across the country, calling for educational institutions to sever financial connections with Israeli-linked entities.

Michael Lydon Strong, 43, from Dallas, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stalking his former girlfriend and her 13-year-old son in late 2020 in west Cobb. Already serving six years for selling cocaine, Strong was found guilty of aggravated stalking and disorderly conduct. The victim and her son had sought a restraining order against Strong due to his violent behavior. He violated the order by breaking into their home while they slept. The son called 911, and officers arrived while Strong was still inside. Strong's earliest release date is Oct. 12, 2030. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. emphasized the office's commitment to protecting domestic violence victims.

STORY 3: Smyrna Man Arrested for Murder
