27 | The mind body connection in fertility with Becky Ackerman

27 | The mind body connection in fertility with Becky Ackerman

Welcome back to Mental Makeover Radio, where we explore the profound impact of mental and emotional well-being on our lives. In today's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Becky Ackerman, a fertility coach with a deeply personal connection to the struggles of infertility. Becky's journey through her own fertility challenges led her to discover the often-neglected mind-body connection that plays a crucial role in the fertility process.

Becky shared her story with us, starting from the initial excitement and anticipation of starting a family with her husband, to the years of confusion and frustration that followed as pregnancy remained elusive. She recounted the numerous tests, the discovery of a blocked fallopian tube, and the subsequent surgeries that revealed unexpected conditions like endometriosis and a fibroid, all of which she had no symptoms of prior to diagnosis.

The turning point in Becky's journey came when she decided to take a holistic approach to fertility. She delved into Mayan abdominal massage, hypnosis, and acupuncture, which, combined with a newfound focus on relaxation and visualization techniques, eventually led to a successful pregnancy after six years of trying.

Becky's experience opened her eyes to the power of the mind-body connection, and she now dedicates her work to helping other women navigate their fertility journeys with a sense of calm, confidence, control, and clarity—the four C's that she believes are essential for anyone facing fertility issues.

We also touched on the impact of stress and cortisol on fertility, the importance of setting boundaries, and the need for clarity in one's fertility plan. Becky's insights into the fertility process and the mind-body connection provided a fresh perspective on an often heart-wrenching journey, offering hope and empowerment to those who may feel lost or alone.

25 | Anxiety Exposed: Understanding Its Tactics and Taking Back Control

25 | Anxiety Exposed: Understanding Its Tactics and Taking Back Control

Hello, Mental Makeover community! It's your host, Cecilia Mannella, back with another episode that's all about unpacking the complexities of anxiety. Today, we're not just talking about anxiety disorders, but the everyday anxiety that seems to have become a prevalent part of our lives, especially in the past five years.

Anxiety is like an alarm system in our bodies, warning us of potential dangers. However, when this alarm goes off without a real threat, it becomes problematic, leading to what we know as an anxiety disorder. But not all anxiety is pathological; it's a natural part of our human experience.

In this episode, I've broken down five habits of anxiety that can help you understand its patterns and, ultimately, take back control:

Anxiety as a Mind Reader: Anxiety often convinces us that we can read others' minds, leading us to believe they're thinking negatively about us. But in reality, most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to give us much thought.

Anxiety as a Fortune Teller: It loves to predict the worst outcomes for our future, but it's important to remember that anxiety is a terrible predictor and usually gets it wrong.

Anxiety as a Record Keeper: Anxiety keeps a biased record of our lives, focusing only on our mistakes and failures, and ignoring our successes and moments of joy.

Anxiety as a Bully: It teams up with perfectionism and criticism to push us around and set unrealistic standards, which constantly change to keep us feeling inadequate.

Anxiety as a Word Master: It uses "should" statements to impose guilt and shame, which can lead to withdrawal and isolation, where anxiety thrives.

To combat these habits, I encourage you to ground yourself in your values and beliefs, consult your inner wise voice, and seek connection with others. Remember, anxiety grows in isolation, but it shrinks in the light of connection and community.

I'd love it if you shared this episode with anyone who might benefit from understanding their relationship with anxiety better. Stay connected, laugh at anxiety's attempts to control you, and remember who you are at your core.

Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Mental Makeover Radio. Until next time!

24 | Escape the Gaslighting Trap: 5 Powerful Responses You Need to Know

24 | Escape the Gaslighting Trap: 5 Powerful Responses You Need to Know

In this episode of Mental Makeover Radio, we dive into the hot topic of Narcissism and gaslighting. In today’s culture, the term narcissism is a buzzword that is widely overused and yet we don’t truly have a strong understanding of the complexities of this personality disorder. Cecilia shares the criteria for a diagnosis, highlighting the key points to understand while diving into one specific tactic, gaslighting.

Narcissism is a personality disorder found in the DSM-5 which outline 9 key criteria including a sense of self-importance, preoccupation with power, lack of empathy, and entitlement.

Gaslighting is a manipulative tactic to make someone doubt their perceptions and experiences. There are 4 specific gaslighting tactics: withholding, countering, diverting, and trivializing. Gaslighting is intentional and manipulative and is meant to create confusion and doubt it creates in the victim.

"I'm sorry that you feel that way."

"I can accept your faulty perception of me."

"I have no right to control how you see me."

"I guess I have to accept how you feel."

"Your anger is not my responsibility."
