The Dollar Milkshake Theory, an idea created by Brent Johnson of Santiago Capital to explain the role of the US Dollar in the global monetary system, is a reference to the infamous milkshake scene in the movie “There Will Be Blood”.

The clever narrative, like all good tales, has taken on a life of its own, and just like the movie from which it credits its name, the “theory” has also attracted its share of haters.

Brent takes it all in stride and finds humor in the drama. Particularly that which occurs on Twitter, where he is a well-known antagonist and where most financial debates congregate nowadays.

So, Brent and his friend Jon Kutsmeda decided to share some of the social madness on a weekly show, while bringing some much needed perspective to the financial debate.

    THE CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE

This time last week the Yen was on a meltdown that many believed marked the end of the Japanese currency.

However, it was able to step back from the ledge, perhaps with a little help from The Fed and the BOJ.

Meanwhile, the internet was in frenzy after a clip went viral showing an economic advisor for the Biden Admin stumbling through an explanation of why the government is not able to simply print money … or can it?

In our debt based financial system we are all playing musical chairs, until there is a crisis of confidence.

This week Brent Johnson and Jon Kutsmeda discuss how much longer we can expect to hear the music, and who will get the last chair standing.

    THE FED IS TRAPPED

Brent got stuck recording this episode without air conditioning, but he isn’t the only one feeling the heat.

The Fed desperately wants to cut rates to save the banking system from collapse, but they are stuck between a rock (politics) and a hard place (record high asset prices).

The equity markets aren’t the only ones who can see the Fed sweating. Bitcoin and the YOLO crowd are also raising the temperature as crypto prices have surged without a rate cut in sight.

Is this just irrational exuberance and the sign of a top, or has the market correctly called the Fed’s bluff?

Can risk assets continue to melt-up as the banks melt down?

    WALL ST BOOM AND DOOM

Can the Magnificent 7 carry the torch for a 2nd year in a row, or are they already priced for perfection?

The stock market is a graveyard of heroes who misunderstood the risks ahead of them, and as the Fed tries talking back rate cut expectations it appears the herd is running full speed to their slaughter.

Best finance podcast

This show has found its voice and has become my only regular listen.

I prefer watching it on YouTube where their videos include extra visuals, like charts, and they also post 3 additional recordings per week that don’t make it on the audio channels.

Also, none of that doom and gloom clickbait, the conversations are honest and grounded, which helps me make sense of all the other noise out there.

If you like variety podcasts, but also have an interest in finance this is worth a try. Two fun gents talking about a range of topics while sharing unique perspectives on global financial markets.
