Podcast en Spanish (PES) - Learn Spanish as a Second Language

If, like me, you took Spanish in high school, spending hours in a language lab, learning boring dialogs: “¿Cómo están Pablo y Luisa? Pablo está bien, pero Luisa tiene catarro. ¡Qué lástima, lo siento, ojalá que se mejore pronto!” Which, by the way, was the exact same dialog that you learned in French class, except there the leading characters were Paul et Marie, you will understand the revolution in Spanish learning offered by the “Podcasts En Spanish” from Spanish Tutor DC! The podcasts are authentic conversations between two native Spanish speakers (who happen be husband and wife). Learners are exposed to different accents (the husband is Spanish the wife Mexican), and the podcasts are offered at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Unlike my old friends Pablo y Luisa, the listener is not exposed to a difficult verb like “mejore” in the fist lesson without the slightest explanation. I love the fact that “Podcasts En Spanish” debunks long-held and nonsensical rules of so-called Spanish grammar. For example, the difference between the verbs “ser” and “estar” is not one of permanent-state vs. temporary-state (a silly distinction that is blown away when the learner hears “el está muerte”). And oh, by the way, it is sometimes possible to use the imperfect subjective when the main clause is in the present tense: “Mucha gente duda que Elvis muriera en 1977.” Rather than offering pat, often overly simplified grammar rules, “Podcasts En Spanish” acknowledges the interesting complexity of real language while offering authentic, humorous, and easily understood explanations all without resorting to English! I wish “Podcasts En Spanish” had been available when I first learned Spanish and I rejoice that they are here now to help me maintain and improve my Spanish proficiency!

Podcast en Spanish is amazing! It is a delightful and very convenient way to learn Spanish. Santiago and Valeria talk in such a natural way that it does not feel like you are taking a class, instead it is like you are watching them in a live conversation. And they are super funny! Now I am also taking the online group class at Spanish Tutor DC and I am pleased with it. It is a great way to meet people from different parts of the world and, since it is a small group, I have plenty of opportunity to practice my Spanish during the class and also learn about Hispanic literature and culture.

I found the Spanish Tutor DC podcast a few weeks, and fell in love with it. I started listening to the podcast and doing the exercises in the guides. The guide the comes with each of the podcast has a ton of information including the transcript of the entire podcast and a lot of exercises. Santiago explains the grammar and the usage so well. I signed up with the online class this week, and I went through a phone interview with Santiago, so that I could be placed at the right level. I am very happy that the level selected for me was perfect to my ability. My teacher Sonia is a native of Barcelona, and she has a lovely style using effective methods to engage the students in the online setting. I got a lot of opportunities to speak, to do some reading and discussions with Sonia and students in the class. The class size is small. We had 3 students total this week, and normally this class has one other student. The class size is normally limited to 7-8.
