Queer Athens is a bilingual podcast interview series that shares the stories and experiences of Greek LGBTQ+ people from the 1960s to the present in their own words. Our mission is twofold: to share the rich tradition of queer activism in Greece with a wider audience, domestically and abroad, and to bear witness to the profound changes in what it has meant to be queer in Greece from the mid-20th century to the present.

It’s your problem that you’re homophobic
In this episode, a 20-year-old lesbian narrates her experiences of self-discovery as a teenager growing up in Larissa. She reflects on the process of unlearning the homophobic myths and lies that pervaded her home, school, and community. She talks about the challenges of navigating relationships with close-minded parents and the changes in perspective she has gained since living in Athens as a university student.

If Things Had Been Different
In this episode, a 42-year-old woman from Patras shares her experience of growing up in an environment where homosexuality was a completely taboo topic. She talks about the culture shock of moving to Athens as a young adult and discovering worlds she never knew existed. She reflects on the experience of coming to terms with her attraction to women from within an established heterosexual marriage, and the process of ultimately divorcing in order to establish her priorities and live an authentic life.

I learned how to avoid trouble
In this episode, Kostas shares the experience of embracing his gay identity as a teenager in suburban Attica in the 1980s. He describes the challenges faced by young people navigating a very limited gay scene in Athens, including police harassment, parental scrutiny, and restricted means of communication. He speaks about the duality of living a gay life in downtown Athens while simultaneously trying to meet familial expectations and avoid community judgment in his hometown. Kostas reflects on the pressure he feels to remain closeted in his professional life while ultimately remaining optimistic about the changes in Greek society and LGBT acceptance he has witnessed in the past three decades.

Σε αυτό το επεισόδιο, ο Κώστας μοιράζεται την εμπειρία της αποδοχής της ομοφυλοφιλικής του ταυτότητας, ως έφηβος στα προάστια της Αττικής τη δεκαετία του 1980. Περιγράφει τις προκλήσεις που αντιμετώπιζαν οι νέοι σε μια πολύ περιορισμένη γκέι σκηνή στην Αθήνα, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της αστυνομικής παρενόχλησης, του γονικού ελέγχου και των περιορισμένων μέσων επικοινωνίας. Μιλάει για τη διττή φύση του να ζεις μια γκέι ζωή στο κέντρο της Αθήνας, ενώ ταυτόχρονα προσπαθείς να ανταποκριθείς στις οικογενειακές προσδοκίες, αποφεύγοντας την κρίση της τοπικής κοινωνίας στη γενέτειρά του. Ο Κώστας αναλογίζεται την πίεση που νιώθει να παραμείνει κρυφός στην επαγγελματική του ζωή, ενώ παράλληλα παραμένει αισιόδοξος για τις αλλαγές στην ελληνική κοινωνία και την ΛΟΑΤΚΙ αποδοχή που έχει βιώσει τις τελευταίες τρεις δεκαετίες.
