EP 070 - “Breaking the Silence: From Hidden Abuse to Hopeful Recovery” Read By Sharon Lawrence - Written By Joshua Young

Welcome back to Coffee and Conversation’s "Between the Lines" Blog Club Series. In episode #70, Sharon Lawrence will read Joshua Young’s blog post, "Breaking the Silence: From Hidden Abuse to Hopeful Recovery.” Sharon may be best known for her multiple Emmy Award-nominated and SAG Award-winning portrayal of Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Costas Sipowicz in NYPD Blue. She also played numerous other roles, from a recurring role as a stay-at-home prostitute in Desperate Housewives to a charming but murderous realtor on Monk. She has also had recurring roles on Ladies Man, Shameless, and, most recently, playing Missy on all three seasons of the Paramount Plus show “Joe Pickett.”
An accomplished stage actress, Sharon has appeared in numerous plays, including her solo play, THE SHOT, which she currently performs nationwide. Sharon’s performance has been described as “a luminescent performance informing us that sexual and psychological abuse knows no boundaries of economy or class or fame.” You can learn more about Sharon and The Shot in the show notes.
“Between The Lines” episodes are written by guests who prefer to share their stories using their written voice instead of their interview voice.
As always, we want to remind you that the views expressed in any blog are solely those of the author. Our aim is to provide a safe space for their voice to be heard. In this episode, we discuss a sensitive topic-domestic violence. If you find yourself feeling distressed, please remember to reach out to your support system. Your well-being is our utmost priority.
Just a quick reminder about the Recovery Advocate Network (RAN). RAN's mission is to support individuals dedicated to their recovery journey but facing challenges due to insurance loopholes. We are on the verge of funding our first bridge grant, which will provide crucial financial assistance to those in need. Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in changing and saving lives. We are grateful to have you as part of our community. So, consider visiting our website and clicking the “Donate” button today.
So, what are we waiting for? Fill up your coffee, sit back, and let's get started.

EP 067 - Caragh Donley Shares Her Inspiring Journey as a Transgender Individual and Coming Out at 63

EP 067 - Caragh Donley Shares Her Inspiring Journey as a Transgender Individual and Coming Out at 63

In this episode, we are privileged to have a special guest, Caragh Donley, who is going to share her inspiring story about her journey as a transgender individual. She will encourage us to know that it is never too late to start living our authentic lives and being our best selves. Caragh took the brave step of coming out at the age of 63 and has shared her story with HuffPost and live on the Kelly Clarkson show, where she works as a producer. I will include the relevant links in the show notes for those interested in learning more about her story.
In the Huff Post, Caragh says, “These experiences make it clear that transitioning has never been about “switching genders.” Instead, it’s really about finally experiencing self-worth, taking the lead in my life instead of watching it from the mezzanine, and not only trusting others with my story but also trusting myself — none of which I ever expected to do at 63.”
    More about Caragh:
She has worked for outlets including People magazine, TV Guide, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Emmy Magazine, and Vanity Fair. She’s the author of “The Can’t-idates: Running for President When Nobody Knows Your Name.” In addition to her print work, she’s worked as a producer on shows including VH1’s “Behind the Music,” “The Queen Latifah Show” and “The Martin Short Show.” She is currently a senior producer with “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

EP 065 - Advocating For Drug Control Approaches That Prioritize Life & Well-being with Christina Dent - Founder & President of End It For Good

Welcome back to Coffee and Conversation with Recovery Advocate Network.  I am your host, Ange, and I welcome you to Episode number 65.
In this episode, we have a special guest, Christina Dent, who is the Founder & President of End It For Good, a non-profit organization based in Mississippi that advocates for drug control approaches that prioritize life and well-being. Christina used to support a criminal justice approach to drugs until she became a foster parent and experienced a radical change in perspective about how to reduce drug-related harm. In her new book, "Curious," we explore her journey of shifting perspectives on addiction and advocating for a health-centered approach.
During our conversation, Christina shares her experience as a foster parent and how it challenged her preconceived notions about addiction. We emphasize the importance of addressing the underlying causes of addiction and reducing the stigma associated with it. We also highlight the long-term impact of addiction on individuals, families, and communities, as well as the need for trauma-informed approaches.
Christina calls for a shift in policies and a focus on harm and trauma reduction in addressing addiction. We also discuss the importance of speaking up and the challenges of doing so. We explore the failures of drug prohibition and the need for alternative approaches. We discuss the impact of drug enforcement and the rise of dangerous substances like fentanyl. Finally, we highlight the need to educate and equip children to make informed choices.
