The Smartphone Plunge | Krista Boan and Adam Reck

At START, we often talk about how this generation of parents is breaking new ground. Smartphones have changed our social and cultural landscape, and they’ve given rise to unprecedented challenges for parents as they discern how to introduce them to their kids.

For START co-founder Krista Boan, these aren’t abstract questions. From the beginning, she knew smartphones were in her kids’ future, and 2021 was the year she took the leap with her oldest daughter.

On this episode of the podcast, the tables are turned; she’s on the other side of the interview table and her friend Adam Reck is interviewing her. Adam has years of experience working with kids as a mentor and a student minister at Krista’s church. He’s also seen countless families make this transition. In this conversation, they compare notes and share wisdom as Krista discusses the steps her family took to introduce a new smartphone, the roles apps and filters can use, and the importance of wisdom, communication, and connection with your kids.

Invaluable resource for parents in today’s world

Thank you so much START team for all of the work you do and for creating this timely & insightful podcast for all of us who are pioneering the parent role in this fast-moving technological age. I feel enlightened, encouraged and equipped through listening to your podcasts and using your other materials. What has felt like a heavy load to carry alone, now feels like a hopeful endeavor as a parent who is linking arms with you to bravely go against the cultural tide to protect and equip our children to achieve healthy screen habits, although I humbly admit we are a work in progress! So grateful for you guys!!

Such necessary conversations

As a mom of a soon to be teenager and 3 other younger children, this topic is so necessary and important. I don't have a ton of time to research and stay up to date with the latest technology, so being able to listen to a podcast that helps assist me with conversations about technology with my kids plus keep me informed is such a blessing!! In addition, I need help personally to keep technology in check in my own life so I appreciate how this podcast can help me navigate this also.

Amy Crouch...wow!

Just listened to episode 2 and learned so much! I had to start taking notes five minutes in because there was so much great info being shared. I loved her suggestion to keep your circle small and her wise words at the end about how growing up tech-wise has prepared her to have discernment as an adult. Encouraging for parents and a great conversation to have with my own teen.
