How to talk to kids about their nervous system
Educating your kids about how their brain and bodies work can be a game changer when it comes to supporting their regulation. When we give them the cheat sheet to how their brain works, they can start to understand why certain things are hard for them, and why they may have certain quirks or behaviors. More importantly, when we educate our kids about how their brain and bodies work, it can give them the language to self advocate with peers or other adults around them and give them the motivation to try the strategies that will support their regulation.
In this episode, I’ll help you start the conversation with your child about their nervous system and how it helps the brain and body communicate with eachother.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why it’s important to explain to your child how their brain and body communicateHow to explain the body and brain connection to your child Links:

A sensory lens
Laura has helped me see my autistic SPD son’s behavior through a sensory lens, and it’s made all the difference. Because I have a better understanding of how sensory stimuli affect his brain, I can anticipate and preempt sensory overload with the strategies I learned from Laura. Excellent podcast!!
What I needed!
Our daughter was recently evaluated and we found out she has SPD. When your child is struggling, it’s just really heart wrenching. I had no idea what type of resources I needed or where to even start. I happened across OTButterfly and wow. I love her Instagram stories and this podcast is awesome. The episodes are a quick listen that cover so many relevant topics and provide good info/tips. I also appreciate the fact that not everything is sugar coated, because navigating this is just really hard and it feels refreshing to have a parent and expert just be real about the frustration and hard moments.
Wisdom and unscripted feelings in one show
I am on the first few episodes and i feel like she knowns every feeling i have gone through as a parent on ND kid. I feel lighter after listening to some of her unscripted episodes.
