    Empowerment with Lora King

    Empowerment with Lora King

Activist, philanthropist, and community leader Lora King shares her best tips for how to take initiative, roll up your sleeves, and proactively solve problems by bringing people together instead of sowing division. In this time full of conflict and stress, Lora is a bright light, full of positivity and encouragement, even as she recounts some of the traumatic experiences she went through growing up in the public eye as the daughter of Rodney King. King’s name reverberated throughout the country after he was beaten by four white officers in 1991. A bystander captured the event, and the eventual acquittal of the officers in 1992 led to six days of rioting across Los Angeles.
In this enlightening interview, Lora shares the unknown side of Rodney King and honors her father’s legacy with the Rodney King Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting peace, getting along, and working in the community to promote positive race relations and achieve social justice. Her hopeful message will touch your heart and teach you how to build bridges between unlikely collaborators and enhance individual and community self-esteem. Her amazing work has had a domino effect on the lives she has touched, and her recent roll-out of the “I am King” program helps black fathers spend more time with their families, fighting negative stereotypes about the black community, and giving black families the resources needed for a positive environment where kids can thrive and be their best.
Lora and Dr. Judy discuss the supercharged secret of Empowerment and how to create meaningful change with grace and strength. If you use the practical and effective strategies discussed in this episode, you will experience joy, peace, and purpose in your life and help others to do the same. Lora is truly inspirational and her impactful work is leading the way for social justice and setting a great example for how to create change in an inclusive way. Her powerful message will resonate with you, no matter your background, and you will be moved by her maturity and grace in dealing with complex and difficult discussions and take these lessons into your life.

Becoming a Superhero with Nicole Maines

Becoming a Superhero with Nicole Maines

Transgender actress Nicole Maines plays a superhero on her hit TV show “Supergirl,” but she’s also a superhero in her everyday life. As young as 3 years of age, Nicole knew that the biological sex she was assigned at birth was not right, and struggled with anger, anxiety, and sadness. With the support of her parents, Nicole started transitioning genders in the 1st grade, and the thoughtful and gradual changes were generally accepted by her peers. However, in middle school, after a run-in with a boy who took issue with her use of the female bathroom, the school staff barred her from using the female bathroom, and increasingly isolated her from normal experiences on- and off-campus.

Nicole and her family sued the school district for discrimination and after a five-year court battle she was victorious when the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the school violated the Human Rights Act. Her landmark win prohibited barring transgender students access to bathrooms, paving the way for transgender justice and inclusivity. Her activism continues to this day and people regularly call on Nicole to guide them on how they can promote equality and inclusivity in their own communities.

Nicole’s stories are so incredible relatable, no matter how you identify yourself on the gender and sexual preferences spectrums. As a young woman, Nicole is wise beyond her years and the lessons she has learned are ones all human beings can benefit from, as we ponder what it truly means to be authentic, joyful, and purposeful in our lives. Nicole reminds us to self-reflect in a way that is constructive rather than destructive and how to embrace each other’s differences. She calls on each person to dig deeply and determine what fears are holding us back, and why gossip holds such allure and offers temporary satisfaction, but ultimately steals a piece of our individual integrity. Dr. Judy reveals five actionable tips to be your own superhero which include letting moments of adversity be catalysts for personal growth, stopping blame, and gaining strength by avoiding your personal kryptonite. This lit conversation is going to help you to accomplish the extraordinary every day and to uncover incredible moments in the ordinary.

    In this episode, we discuss:
    1. Setting the bar at superhero level (2:05)
    2. Being the first transgender superhero on TV (2:50)
    3. Exploring power and control in Nicole’s film bit (5:30)
    4. The common misconceptions about transgender individuals (14:20)
    5. The state of the science about the gender spectrum (19:45)
    6. Nicole’s struggles as a child and how her parents and peers responded (22:15)
    7. Nicole’s dating life and getting back into the game (27:35)
    8. How Nicole’s landmark legal case started in the bathroom (29:20)

Overcoming Codependency with Author Eilene Zimmerman

In today’s delicate world, laden with the horrors of the Covid19 pandemic and racial injustices hitting fever pitch, other systemic problems have been temporarily swept aside. In this episode, Dr. Judy meets New York Times’ Best-Selling author Eilene Zimmerman, who talks about her new memoir “Smacked,” and the opioid epidemic that shattered her family and caused her to deeply examine her life.
Eilene, a decorated journalist of more than 30 years, recounts the day she found her ex-husband Peter dead in his $2 million home from a drug overdose and the devastation he left behind. If you, or someone you know, struggle with any form of codependency or addiction, this episode will arm you with five lifesaving tips to fix blurred boundaries, reconfigure childhood attachment issues, enhance low self-esteem and heal deep seated grief. You will be moved by Eilene’s stories of brutal self-examination and how she and her family have taken the valuable lessons learned to move on and inspire others to rebuild and live their best lives.
