Bowel cancer awareness month: A Patients story with Carmel Drohan with friend and surgeon Prof Ann Brannigan
As April is bowel cancer awareness month we are delighted to have a bonus episode for our listeners. We are joined by Carmel Drohan who was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in 2015 and she talks us through her experience to date. Carmel has had multiple surgerys and chemotherapy treatments and we are extremely grateful to her for sharing her story with us. We are also joined by her friend and well known surgeon Professor Ann Brannigan who walks us through what bowel cancer is and how it may present, advancments in bowel cancer treatments, and the important role of the multidisciplinary team plays in deciding individual treatment plans for patients.

The impacts of prostate cancer treatment on men and their partners with Martin Sweeney
Today on the podcast we are joined by the wonderful Martin Sweeney who's joins us today to speak about support for men after a cancer diagnosis. Martin speaks about his own diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2015 and how the support recieved particularly from arc cancer support led him to becoming a group facilitator for men with prostate cancer and his involvement with the Irish cancer society public patient involvement panel and the work he does with the urology team in the mater hospital with the postpor programmes helps prepare men for a prostatectomy. Today we speak about some of the side effects experienced from prostate cancer treatment and how speaking these personal and intimate issues can central to people's treatment outcomes. This week on the podcast we are joined by Dr Daniel Cagney to discuss Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer Patients .
Dr. Daniel Cagney is clinical director of radiation oncology at Mater Private Hospital, Dublin and network director of stereotactic radiation.
Dr. Cagney’s internship and general medical training was in the Mercy Hospital Cork and Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. He did a year in medical oncology in Mater Hospital before commencing specialist training in radiation oncology in St Luke’s Hospital, Dublin. In parallel to his radiation oncology training, he received a MSc in oncology and palliative care from Newcastle University. His radiation oncology fellowship was in Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, Boston. He is a fellow of the Faculty of Radiologists of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FFR RCSI) and a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology (DABR).
Since 2017 he has held several strategic positions at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, including consultant radiation oncologist, director of stereotactic radiation and director of MRI Guided Radiation Programme. He held the academic appointment of assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. -
