    053. The Power is in the Debrief

"The Power is in the Debrief".  My friend, who works in the business world, said this to me recently.  As we talked, what he really was talking about was the importance of reflection and self-assessment.

In this episode of the podcast, I discuss the different ways reflection can benefit student learning, and also discuss a perfect opportunity for reflection that you should be using--and that some choir directors are missing out on!

You can find the Edutopia.org article that I reference here.

    050. Rehearsal Wisdom from Dr. Edith Copley

    050. Rehearsal Wisdom from Dr. Edith Copley

There's been a LOT of things going on lately, and one of the things we've been involved in recently was the Iowa All-State Chorus.  This year, it was Dr. Edith Copley leading the choir, and she was AMAZING!  Throughout the weekend, she shared a number of rehearsal concepts with the singers that are pretty much universal, no matter what it is that you are singing.  These nuggets of rehearsal wisdom were just too valuable not to share, so in today's episode I'm doing just that--sharing with you five rehearsal concepts from the great Dr. Copley that you can take and immediately incorporate them into your choir rehearsals.

If you'd like to learn more about Dr. Copley's rehearsal concepts, I've posted a list from Dr. Copley that she shared at the ICDA Summer Symposium a number of years ago.  It's chock full of fantastic rehearsal ideas!  You can find that list at:

    048. How I Combined Music and My Choir's Love of Halloween

    048. How I Combined Music and My Choir's Love of Halloween

Do your singers like Halloween?  My singers don't just LOVE Halloween, they are CRAZY about it!  So this year, I wanted to come up with an activity that combined music along with their love of Halloween.  In this episode, I will discuss the activity--Halloween Music Jeopardy--the steps I took in putting everything together, and how it went with my choirs (hint--I'll DEFINITELY be doing it again!)

This will be an episode to listen to, get some ideas brewing, and then stash it away in the back of your brain for when Halloween rolls along!

A nice resource for practical information

I enjoy listening to The Choir Director Corner podcast. Matt does a nice job of presenting practical information- things that can be put to use right away! The episodes are usually pretty concise, but they contain ideas you could apply in your rehearsals and planning.
