Exploring Southeast European Cinema: A Conversation with SEEfest Founder Vera Mijojlić

In this episode I sit down with the remarkable Vera Mijojlić, the visionary founder behind the Southeast European Film Festival in Los Angeles. Together, we paint a vivid picture of a region's heart and soul, captured through the lens of its filmmakers. It's a conversation that transcends the expected narratives of conflict, inviting you to discover a world where the drama of real life inspires profound storytelling. My own memories of SEEfest, from teaching to adjudicating, serve as a testament to the festival's power in nurturing emerging talents and celebrating our shared human experiences.

This week's talk also shines a spotlight on the unsung heroes of cultural events: the sponsors and volunteers. Their dedication is the lifeblood that allows the festival to flourish, supporting a stage where new voices can be heard and appreciated. As we prepare for the upcoming edition in Los Angeles, my heart is full of gratitude for the community that comes together in this celebration of cinema. From the anticipation of witnessing a premiere talent to the joy of connecting with you through our shared passion for storytelling, this episode is an invitation to join us in an ongoing dialogue that revels in the diversity and richness of Southeast European narratives.

Authentic Wealth- unlocking the energy of abundance with Kyle Cease

Authentic Wealth- unlocking the energy of abundance with Kyle Cease

When I embarked on my acting career, I believed success and happiness were always just beyond reach – until I realized that true wealth comes from within. This revelation is at the core of my conversation with  the  soul-centered Kyle Cease,  who evolved from comedian to motivational speaker and author, guiding us through the 'starving artist' myth and beyond. Together, we dissect the often-misguided pursuit of happiness through achievement and challenge the societal norms that can blind us to our innate worth.

As we pull at the threads of self-worth, love, and the chase for affluence, Kyle and I share candid stories from our personal journeys. Shedding light on the illusion of external validation, we examine the irony that our bank accounts and love lives are frequently perceived as the scorecards of our existence. The potent reminder that emerges is our capacity to tap into our own limitless nature, to love ourselves first and recognize that our true value is not for the world to decide, but for us to understand and embrace.

Our dialogue culminates in a powerful reflection on personal evolution, particularly in the realms of self-help and parenting. We discuss the transition from simply chasing positive thinking to confronting our deeper traumas, and how this shift is crucial for authentic growth. The episode offers a sanctuary for listeners to contemplate their own 'masks' and identities, encouraging them to step into the expansive, magical beings we are at our core. Join us for this one of a kind podcast session, where we explore the magic of authenticity and personal growth, and the sheer joy that comes with living true to oneself.

The Dance of Light and Shadow of the Cinematographer: a conversation with Kim Miles

The Dance of Light and Shadow of the Cinematographer: a conversation with Kim Miles

Can the look of a movie or series tell the story as much as the actors in it?  Let's deep dive into the world of the dance of light and shadow through the lens of  Emmy-nominated cinematographer C Kim Miles.
Kim's remarkable journey from the colorful bustle of Malaysia to the high-stakes soundstages of Hollywood will captivate you.  Starting from being a humble grip to a sought-after industry visionary, his  international perspective brings a unique flavor to projects like "Yellowjackets" and "The Brothers Sun," revealing how a diverse upbringing can deeply enrich one's artistic expression.

Imagine the adrenaline rush of getting the call to meet a legendary director like Robert Zemeckis overnight,  leading to a whirlwind of anticipation and opportunity to be the DP  in the Zemeckis film "Welcome to Marwen." Kim and I explore the mix of anticipation and disbelief that encapsulates these serendipitous occurrences in the film industry.

In this episode, we also discuss the synergy between a director and cinematographer as they sculpt the visual narrative of a film—as if in a dance, where every step is a frame and every turn is a new shade of light. Kim's fondness for indie projects, even after big-budget spectacles, underscores a heartfelt dedication to cinema that's driven by passion more than paycheck.

Join me for this masterclass in passion, perseverance, and cinematic storytelling that'll leave you yearning to create, connect, and chase your own dreams.

From Script to Screen The Producer's Crucible

From Script to Screen The Producer's Crucible

There has been such a black cloud over the job of Studio Producers in the recent years, so we decided to bring on a rainbow and give you a peak behind the Hollywood curtain of studio producer Carol Baum, a  fixture in the industry with credits like "Father of the Bride," who shares a wealth of knowledge from her latest book, reflecting on her 34-film journey and imparting lessons on maintaining the soul of original material.

Carol speaks on behalf of all movie and television producers in her latest book,  "Creative Producing" and gives no nonsense advice for long term success in Hollywod and beyond. In fact, her book is a perfect companion to my book "An Insider's Secret: Mastering the Hollywood Path" as she takes us down memory lane on the path from script to screen of legendary and iconic movies.

Carol opens up about the necessity of fostering relationships, recognizing promising projects, and the virtue of professional courtesy in an environment where your next big break could be just one conversation away. We also discuss  the significance of mentorship, preparing the next generation for the realities of the entertainment landscape.

Drawing from both our  personal experiences and industry anecdotes, we highlight the importance of having a creative confidant to share both triumphs and setbacks.

Guardians of the Wild: Women's Impact on Conservation and Cinema

Guardians of the Wild: Women's Impact on Conservation and Cinema

My guest today is Vanessa Berlowitz, executive producer and founder of Wildstar Films,  and the docuseries QUEENS currently airing on NAT GEO and DISNEY + where tales of female animals ruling their realms parallel the strides made by women behind the camera. Vanessa shares her experiences from the four-year filming odyssey, revealing the stark realities of climate change and the emotional sagas of the matriarchs in the animal Kingdom.  The episode is a testament to the industry's evolving landscape, where luminaries such as cinematographers Justine Evans and Sophie Darlington not only lead but also mentor the emerging generation of diverse female talent behind the lens.

Where storytelling meets conservation, this episode is a chorus of voices advocating for the unsung heroines of the wild. It's a celebration of the indomitable spirit of women like Tanya Escobar and the Lionesses patrol group in Kenya, whose steadfast efforts in wildlife protection are brought to the fore. Adding to the symphony, the esteemed Angela Bassett lends her voice and vision to "Queens," championing the essence of diversity and female strength.

We share invaluable insights for aspirant filmmakers on weaving genuine wildlife experiences into compelling narratives and urge listeners to partake in the global conservation dialogue through informed choices. Tune in for an episode that not only spotlights a groundbreaking series but also serves as a clarion call to support the creators and guardians of our natural world.
