The events that took place in Chester County, Pennsylvania in August 1978 were unthinkable. Family killing family. A father calling for the murder of his own son. For years The Johnston Gang got away with everything—theft, burglary, violence—until the brazen attacks of August 1978 crossed a line, and the family crime empire began to crumble. Host and writer Amanda Lamb shares her own memories of the murders and the trials that followed. Her father was the lead prosecutor who helped bring the killers to justice. A fictional account of The Johnston Gang’s downfall was portrayed in the 1986 movie “At Close Range,” but this is the real story of a violent family crime operation and the long task of bringing its leaders to justice. The Killing Month August 1978 is a production of WRAL News in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Great podcast, but…

It’s an great podcast overall, would definitely recommend. The only thing is, when it comes to the trial, the narrator uses the word “snitch” a ridiculous number of times and always adds an emphasis in her tone when she says it. It seems so unnecessary and is very bizarre.
Absorbing

As a current resident of the area this was fascinating. The podcaster has a personal angle that really brings the listener into the story.
Loved this podcast!!!!

I grew up in Newark DE and left in 1980 at the age of 22. I never heard of the Johnston gang or this story. I was frustrated by the fact these guys could have been harassed and even jailed for all the known burglaries and transporting stolen vehicles and tractors across state lines. Could this have stalled the killing of poor Robin and the Kiddie Gang in 8/78. Justice seemed to take a long time to take these criminals down for the 100s of thousands of $$$ they were stealing. I loved the podcaster’s voice and I enjoyed the father DA and their relationship in this story. I felt the cops were very complacent about this “Gang” and when they finally started to build a case by getting young gang members to turn on the 3 brothers, the killing started. To me they were like surprised?? that these hillbilly car and tractor robbers were even more evil than they imagined.
Infuriating

It’s so frustrating that justice for Robin after she was drugged and raped as a teenager at the hands two adult men wasn’t even talked about. The investigators just ignored it and wanted info on stolen tractors.
