How to Optimise Your Heart Rate Variability | Dan Plews PhD

How to Optimise Your Heart Rate Variability | Dan Plews PhD

Its been hailed as the one key biometric anyone can measure easily that gives the best all-round indicator of health and stress on the body. As more devices are able to collect high-quality Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data during the night, a few questions come up:
What data should we use as HRV score?
    What is a good HRV?
Why is my HRV plummeting after a glass of wine?

How can I increase my HRV?
I have been wanting to dive deep into the HRV literature for quite some time. My community is very big on wearables such as wearing the WHOOP and our ring so they know what HRV is and they have, of course been asking me for advice on understanding HRV. I went out in search of the best person to talk to about this and came across Dan Plews an Applied Sports Scientist, Researcher and coach.

Amidst growing concern about COVID-19 infection, health officials have provided several recommendations to help individuals protect themselves and their families from infection, including washing hands regularly and maintaining a distance of at least six feet from anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Fortunately, a growing body of evidence suggests that an additional lifestyle modification could also dramatically improve your odds of avoiding infection—and that modification is getting more sleep.

In this episode, Matteo and I sit down in a Q&A style and discuss the features of the mattress and he reveals insights into sleep that are quite compelling and fascinating. You will not only learn about the science of sleep but also the science of the technology and I am sure you will learn just as much as I did!

Healing Trauma with Psychedelics | Dr. David Rabin MD, PhD

Healing Trauma with Psychedelics | Dr. David Rabin MD, PhD

There has been a lot of curiosity about the continued developments in the psychedelic therapy space recently. Designer drugs such as, Psilocybin, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) have started to emerge within the athletic space.

In May of 2019, a video was leaked featuring the Washington Capitals’ Evgeny Kuznetsov sitting near two lines of a white, powder-like substance that many presumed to be cocaine. It was taken while the team was in Las Vegas to play the Golden Knights. When I read this it immediately prompted me to find out more about what this substance does to the brain which is why I recruited the wonderful Dr David Rabin, MD PhD to the neuro experience podcast via clubhouse.
Dr. Rabin specializes in treatment-resistant mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosomatic disorders, personality disorders, chronic pain disorders, insomnia, and substance use disorders using minimal and non-invasive treatment strategies.
“Psychedelic medicine is unique because it allows us, whether it's MDMA or LSD, or psilocybin or ketamine, to step outside of that default mode and look back at ourselves, and really reappraise what it means to be us,” he says.

Dominic D'Agostino, Ph.D: Ketones, Brain Health & Athletic Performance

Dominic D'Agostino, Ph.D: Ketones, Brain Health & Athletic Performance

Ketosis. It has become one of the most popular words of the 21st century. Often connected to weight loss plans, “ketosis” is also strongly associated with epilepsy: the ketogenic diet was first introduced by clinicians as a treatment for epilepsy in the 1920s. Over the last decade, researchers have been studying the effect of ketosis on other neurological and mitochondrial disorders, with promising results. The body's metabolic physiology undergoes profound changes when consuming a ketogenic diet. Ketoadaptation occurs when the body shifts from burning glucose as a primary fuel source to principally using fatty acids and ketones. Over time, the body's capacity to transport and utilize ketones upregulates, resulting in enhanced fat oxidation.

In Today’s episode, I sit down with Dr. Dom D’Agostino. He holds a PhD in neuroscientist and physiology and is a professor at the University of South Florida, and is probably most recognisable to people listening to this because he is certainly one of the foremost experts on ketosis, and that's in all variants of it; so starvation, ketosis, nutritional ketosis, keto diet for epilepsy, how the ketogenic diet related to TBI and in particular the use of exogenous ketones.

How sleep delays ageing with Dr. Frank Lipman, MD

How sleep delays ageing with Dr. Frank Lipman, MD

Sleep is essential for human health. Not getting enough sleep or having poor, fragmented sleep increases a person's risk of developing many chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

With nearly one-third of all adults in the United States reporting that they are sleep-deprived, the importance of getting a good night's sleep takes on tremendous significance which is why I have brought on Dr. Frank Lipman to the Neuro Experience podcast to discuss his latest book ‘better sleep, better you’ which is available now for pre order.

Dr Lipman is a vocal pioneer of integrative and Functional Medicine, or what he calls “good medicine.” Dr. Lipman is the founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center and the Chief Medical Officer at The Well. He is a sought-after international speaker and the bestselling author of six books.
