What Is The Conrad Challenge?Registration is now open for the 2018-2019  Conrad Challenge (http://www.conradchallenge.org/) . Unlike any STEM competition out there, this annual event unleashes the potential of students to leave their mark on the world, using their innovation and entrepreneurial skills to address some of the most pressing global challenges. In its first 13 years, the Challenge has had student participants from more than 70 different countries.

Coaches and judges from the best in business, industry, research and academia worldwide will guide the teams’ innovative ideas. In February 2019, five teams in each challenge category will be chosen as finalists and travel to the annual Innovation Summit at the  Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/) .

Finalist teams present their innovations before an esteemed panel of judges. Winning teams receive awards, investment opportunities, patent support, business services and scholarships to support the growth of their concepts into real businesses that can make real difference. At the end of the competition, teams maintain ownership of their Intellectual Property.

Interested teams should visit the  2019-2020 Conrad Challenge Overview (https://www.conradchallenge.org/)  for more information on this year’s competition. Expert judges will then select semi-finalist teams in each challenge category who will be invited to develop comprehensive business plans for their innovation.

America’s Navy is proud to partner with the Pete Conrad Foundation to carry on the shared tradition of discovery, creativity and problem-solving. For the fourth year, the Navy will sponsor the Conrad Challenge for and present the annual America’s Navy Gemini Award for Distinguished Innovation in the Spirit of Captain Pete Conrad to the team that best demonstrates the Navy’s characteristics of teamwork, innovation and hard work. Navy subject matter experts will also serve as panel judges, offering feedback based on their professional experience and knowledge in medicine, aviation, cyber technology and engineering.

About our GuestAs the Director of Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC), Andrew Calkins helps to lead a national effort to fundamentally transform secondary and postsecondary education through the development of personalized, competency-based, student-centered, blended learning models, enabled in part by technology. Since its inception late in 2010, NGLC has invested more than $75 million in a range of “building block” innovations and wholeschool and college degree-program models designed by educators to create more personalized learning and substantially improved outcomes for students. These grants have catalyzed many of the leading new models in postsecondary education (SNHU’s College for America and Northern Arizona’s Division of Personalized Learning, for example) and K-12 (Summit, Design Tech, Brooklyn LAB, Cornerstone, MATCH Next, Matchbook, USC Hybrid High, and Horry County Public Schools, for example). The NGLC Regional Funds, seven regional or city-based incubators, are using NGLC funds, supports, and modeling to catalyze 70 more personalized, competency-based, student-centered, blended schools – both charters and in-district schools, by Fall 2016. Together, these breakthrough grantees constitute perhaps the nation’s foremost network of schools, colleges, and universities creating fundamentally new models of learning and institutional organization.

Calkins brings three decades of experience in education reform in leadership positions at Scholastic Inc., where he served as editor of Electronic Learning magazine, Recruiting New Teachers Inc., Mass Insight Education and Research Institute, and the Stupski Foundation. He was the lead author of the influential Mass Insight report, The Turnaround Challenge, which helped to launch the nation’s focused efforts to turn around its most consistently under-performing schools and has been downloaded more than a quarter-million times.

Calkins writes frequently for national publications and websites and has spoken at education conferences and other events across the country. He earned his B.A. from Harvard College and was a Henry Fellow at Pembroke College in the UK. Calkins served for six years as an elected member of the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School Committee and for five years as chair of the board o

Storyman53 ,

Tons of great content, lots of ideas!

I've been listening to this podcast for over two years and continue to learn new things about what is going on in education today. I'm impressed with the self-less nature of Jeff - and of his podcast guests - who do this because they genuinely care about the education and welfare of their students. This podcast is a source of inspiration for me and is a reliable source for ideas and information on the use of technology in the classroom. I have greatly enhanced my own presentations with what I have learned! What a terrific resource for teachers and educators in all strata of the educational system! I have to say that as I have listened to this podcast - and my awareness of the current status of education in America has increased - my faith has been restored in the education system in this country. I have always respected teachers for what they have to do to make their students experience the best possible (and how difficult that has been, and can be)...but that repsect has increased exponentially as I listened to what so many of them are doing - mostly on their own time, and sometimes, at their own expense - in and out of the classroom on behalf of the students and their families. Granted, things are far from ideal (in America's education system, in general), but with people like Jeff, and those who appear and contribute to this podcast, our students will truly benefit from their time in school. Well done, Jeff! I will certainly continue to tell educators (and parents!) that I meet about TeacherCast! Stellar!!

Moby Rocks It ,

I always get something...

I've been listening for a few months now, and I always hear about great uses of technology in the classroom. Jeff and colleagues LOVE sharing information, and provide thorough, pertinent and timely advice to any educator who wants to use technology in a better way in her/his classroom. Keep a note-taker on hand while listening; you’ll never remember all they share.

Great practical ideas

I regularly learn something that can be applied in my school. The ideas are all practical - they can actually be implemented in a real-life school! Thanks.
