Listening to America

Listening to America aims to “light out for the territories,” traveling less visited byways and taking time to see this immense, extraordinary country with fresh eyes while listening to the many voices of America’s past, present, and future. Led by noted historian and humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson, Listening to America travels the country’s less visited byways, from national parks and forests to historic sites to countless under-recognized rural and urban places. Through this exploration, Clay and team find and tell the overlooked historical and contemporary stories that shape America’s people and places. Visit our website at ltamerica.org.

Such a calming, interesting podcast. I love the historical quotes that come up, inspiring.
The best!

I started listening to this show on the radio in 2007 and am still a huge fan! This is my favorite podcast. I have been introduced to so many new interests in history, politics, books, philosophy and more throughout the years. I really found history to be a boring subject until I heard this show. Clay has a way of making Jefferson and so many other historical figures real and thought provoking.
Informative discussions

Although I preferred the TJ hour format, I still find the discussions highly informative and have enjoyed Clay's reports from the road during his Steinbeck travels. As a life long gen x registered Independent, that firmly believes in the principles of our founding and the historical uniqueness of the American Experiment, I am dismayed by the reviews that feel the need to label the show as leftist, liberal, etc.. The ability to listen to others and discuss the issues in a thoughtful, respectful way is the foundation of a healthy republic. Keep up the good work Clay, Lindsey, Joe and all the others. Let us all remember...... " I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend" - Thomas Jefferson
Getting even more political
09/16/2024
These podcasts are on one hand so good, but on the other are getting more explicitly partisan. I guess the temptation is irresistible and the apprehensions for the future too acute. Now I can tune in to be told how racist I am and which party at this time I should vote for.
Historical accuracy, interesting conversations
06/21/2024
It’s very nice to listen to a podcast that is historically accurate with an interesting take on society. Anyone who says there is a bias here has probably been programmed by Fox News to think that the US history is a certain way. I dare you to find one thing that Clay or his guests say that isn’t an accurate depiction of the the history of America. In a time when people think it was “you”Join or “you” Die, they show that it’s really “we” Join, or “we” Die
Finished.

While I respect your opinion and I have much gratitude toward you, Mr. Ellis and others through the education I have received from you, this last episode of the show is the proverbial bridge too far. The absolute nonsense and fallacy that spewed from two gentlemen whom I deeply appreciate is just too much. I feel as though I have been duped or betrayed by you. I will cherish your books which I own and revisit them fondly with memories of before today but I cannot listen to another thing that either of you say. You’ve both become the thing you claim to despise. I bid you both farewell.
Disappointing

Hoped to listen to historical accounts and not personal political opinions. Unfollowing on episode 2.
Life enhancing podcast

In an age of low information voters, rudeness and ridicule online (and in government) this podcast is a wonderful and refreshing reminder of the true meaning of public discourse. Mr. Jenkinson is absurdly smart, educated and a fantastic speaker, yet is quite humorous and easy going with a good dose of self deprecating humor. As if all this wasn't enough the honest and transparent exploration into the endless contradictions of one of history's most important figures is truly fascinating. My only criticism? With Mr. Swenson on sabbatical the show is not quite up to snuff. Swenson has become a critical component of what makes this podcast so wonderful. To have him, then have him taken away is bordering on cruel and unusual punishment! Update. Now with the new show Clay is branching out and I enjoy it as much as ever. I do miss David though but wish him well in his retirement.

The DNC Must Love This Podcasr

I originally started following this podcast because I was looking for something historical that was neutral politically. I thought initially that I had found it here but I was wrong. Jenkinson complains about how partisan America has become and then proceeds to contribute that mess with his left wing pontificating. When the focus of the show was Jefferson and Adams and the founding fathers it was interesting but now it’s become unbearable. If you’re liberal you’ll love it so enjoy. For me, unfollowing.
