Background narrative is only half the story.

As usual this series is incredibly well done, but it portrays a dreadfully unbalanced perspective of the violence against native women. One of the most studied native populations in the US is that of the Alaskan native American Indians. In this population 84.3% of Native American women have experienced some type of domestic violence. Obviously a tragedy and this is way too high, but 56% of Alaskan native American women marry within their tribe or community which means something around half of this violence is self victimization by men of the same racial group. To completely solve this problem we can’t make it another whites versus brown people issue. It’s a much more complicated problem than that and clearly there needs to be a culture change within Native American populations. Additionally, it does not appear that native tribes cultural independence is benefiting them given that this lack of integration complicates jurisdictional authority. Flat out taking down these tribal walls would solve this problem.

One of the Best Ever!

I only recently discovered Up and Vanished and have binged all three seasons. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better true crime or missing person podcast. Payne is a pleasure to listen to and the fact that Payne and team are literally helping to solve cases or flush out offenders is unreal. I hope there’s a season 4 on the way! Keep up the amazing work!!!!!!

Season 1 Up & Vanished Hands Down Best Podcast

I was lucky enough to stumble onto Up and Vanished much later than a lot of other avid listeners and fans of true crime podcasts did. On a 13 hour road trip from Louisiana to North Carolina I was introduced to the genre of true crime podcasts and I could not have picked a better introduction. Payne does a spectacular job sewing together mystery, empathy, cold case luck of the draw, professional insight and dogged, determined journalism to provide his audience with top notch true crime content. Do yourself a favor and enjoy Season 1 of Up & Vanished; because when it ends, you’ll end up like me, yearning to find something that’s as close to it as possible.
