“Managing The Mental Load” with Verity Tuck

“Managing The Mental Load” with Verity Tuck

Book Week dress up day, gold coin donation day, Parent teacher interviews, Sally performing in school assembly, Jack’s birthday party and Charlie’s basketball match.. all in one day!

Then add in your work schedule, the household management and general family and parenting planning.

When and how did our lives get so overloaded?

The daily to do list as a parent has become extreme, as opportunity, technology and pace have sped up over generations.

For the majority  this falls mostly on the mum, and whilst the kids are at school, and really until their self sufficient adults, it doesn’t end.

Verity Tuck, a woman and mum, that managed to successfully build up and ultimately sell her online same day flower delivery service LVLY, decided to stop and smell the roses for a while after the sale of her first start up.

Verity moved her family North of Australia to be beachside and try a new hand at life after what was an exhaustive process of selling her start up.

It was during that time that two things happened, Verity’s daughter had started school and what was already a juggle of Whatsapp groups, child care and kids activities, increased tenfold with school commitments and Verity and her husband Mike who were already feeling  pinch of parental pressure, felt it creep up to a new level.

All the while, whilst taking time out of being  the engine room of a business, Verity could feel the fire in her belly to do something in the start up world again, and felt driven to tackle what she could feel was the cause family life chaos and tackle a cure for the mental load with new technology.

The saying ‘it takes a village’ is fact for people raising children, but not all of us have access to that village, so in the new world of technology, Verity and her husband Mike, were ready to build the village via tech, and support the overwhelming mental load of parents.

"Zoe's Recap on surviving camping and Bec's Ramble about her wild sibling night tattoo"

Bec and Zoe recap on the interview the week prior, the impact it’s had on them as individuals, and how they both drew different ideas from their guest and implement changes in the endeavour to change it up, or give it a go.

Then there is always a ramble involved (usually by Bec) where they chat about what’s been happening and how they have or haven’t managed their current juggle, in their attempt to not be super, but a woman.

“Realising Your Financial Equity” with Rebecca Pritchard

“Realising Your Financial Equity” with Rebecca Pritchard

In Australia, women approaching retirement have about 23% less superannuation than men. As a figure that means approx. a $17 Billion gap, and it’s currently being investigated by the Australian government to understand how the gap has gotten so great. To reflect upon how the gap has occurred, it’s seems glaringly obvious. In Australia, currently there is a 12% gender pay gap within the work force, meaning that on average in a fulltime job, for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns .88cents.Then to account for the unavoidable biology, women are out of the work force for extended periods of time during their child bearing years, with a staggering majority not returning to full time work due to undertaking the carer role of their children, if not additionally, their ageing parents. And to top it off, in Australia, 1 in 10 women leave the workforce due to unmanageable peri-menopause or menopause symptoms that can start to occur in their 40’s onwards. In review, when you summarise the above of forced time out of the workforce versus earning capacity, it’s clear it is limited, especially in comparison to a males ability to work continuously if he so chooses.

That’s where Rebecca Pritchard, an Award Winning Senior Financial Planner at Rising Tide Leading Financial Experts strongly advises women to review their position, including doing the due diligence that’s needed to split their partners superannuation. When asked the question about what is the point in practical terms, as if their partner passes away or they divorce, it will ultimately be equalised, Rebecca responded with “women need to start valuing our moral equity!”. If our wages are unequal and our working capacity is limited due to child bearing, and then the majority are undertaking the carer role where there is no financial value placedand it inhibits earning capacity, then how does all of that effect our self worth if society and the financial world doesn’t place value on it? In the broader picture and financial world, the system and structure hasn’t placed equitable value on a woman’s time out of the workforce, or the carer role, but change is coming with the Australian Government announcing taxpayers taxes will fund superannuation payments on paid parental leave, and that’s a good place to start.

But we speak with Rebecca on the broad picture of how the value of adollar can hold a value on your sense of self, so if you can make financial and administrative changes in your personal money management, it could shift the value you place on your contribution to your household, and in-turn build your financial and emotional self worth.

“Courage, Confidence and Consent” with Chanel Contos

“Courage, Confidence and Consent” with Chanel Contos

    Consent.

It’s seems simple, like it is already a known standard protocol of decent human behaviour, but here we are, in 2024 with statistics like these - More than half of Australian women in their twenties have experienced sexual violence, 97% of girls and women in Australia have experienced street harassment, 1 in 5 women in Australia have been raped, with only 5% of women reporting sexual assault and only 1.7 % of sexual assault cases resulting in a conviction. These statistics are only a few that are outlined in Chanel Contos’ book ‘Consent Laid Bare’.

Chanel, a young women that one night was sitting around with her girlfriends sharing the tragic tales of hook ups gone bad, only to realise it was scarily common and if her and her friends were masking sexual assault traumas that had occurred under the guise of being the socially acceptable ‘norm’, just how many more women are there?

So at the age of 22, she took to Instagram to respectfully poll the question of what was other girls and women’s experiences, only to have such a response that her social media account exploded. From there, Chanel and her friends did a crowd fund and raised $90,000, which then help build a website and set up the petition teachusconsent.com.

Chanel encouraged girls and women to leave their stories of sexual assault by naming only the perpetrators age and school. Nearly 3 years on and 7,000 testimonies, every previously hidden story has helped create data to push for change, which is exactly what is happening.

Chanel and Teachusconsent.com has reformed education in schools, with consent education now being mandatory in all Australian schools from kindergarten to year 10. They have lead the charge with now making stealthing (where a male removes his condom without consent during intercourse) illegal, and received funding to create consent education material in collaboration with not-for-profit, Our Watch.

So the question lies, how does one woman manage to make such change? How do you cope when the world turns to you for guidance on what is one of the most weighing and distressing topics? And what does Chanel think is the seed for true societal change for today, as well as the generations to come?

Definitely worth following.

Really enjoying this podcast. The girls are very good at getting their guests to relax due to their approachable and friendly manor. I’m often reflecting and relating to the content … trying to juggle one’s life and finding better ways to deal with the stress of everyday life as a woman. I always have a laugh out loud somewhere within each episode. Totally recommend!
