#10 | Simplicity, Training and Mental Health Stigma with Andy Hall

#10 | Simplicity, Training and Mental Health Stigma with Andy Hall

Andy is a mentor, coach, mental health ambassador, avid runner, triathlete and a speaker and host. Andy has been a speaker and curator at TEDx events in the north of England and recently completed his first ultra distance.

He is an inspiration and I’m lucky to call him a good friend. I had the pleasure to have Andy join me for a wonderful conversation where we touched on his journey working towards becoming an ultra-marathoner and his plans to become an Ironman. We talk about focus and discipline in training, and simplicity in running and life.

We also have a conversation about tackling those difficult days and if COVID-19 has helped chip away at the social stigma that surrounds mental health.

During this episode I also let you in on what gifts would add value to the runner in your life (including an extra discount code for a small business who I love).

You can find out more about Andy on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

#9 | Agata Winiarska Talks Trail, Adversity and Being an Outsider

#9 | Agata Winiarska Talks Trail, Adversity and Being an Outsider

A conversation with Agata Winiarska. Agata is someone I would describe as pretty damn amazing. I wanted to find out more about her and not necessarily how she got into running, but why she runs.

Agata talks about her love of longer distances and trail running, as well as what she has in store for 2021 after seeing many races and events cancelled due to COVID-19. Agata explains her reasons for becoming straight edge and we discuss why not being a "typical" runner is something we use to our advantage.

An episode couldn't pass at this time of year without making a reference to Christmas. We both have a chat about what Christmas gifts would be beneficial for runners, including "peanut butter for your nuts" - Agata's words, not mine!

    #8 | Part 2 of 2: Darren Smith aka. Runner's Knees Returns

    #8 | Part 2 of 2: Darren Smith aka. Runner's Knees Returns

Me and Darren had unfinished business and it was only right we continued putting the world to rites.

On part 2 of the conversation, Darren recommends the 10k, half marathon and marathon races you should try...and the ones that aren't all cracked up to what they're meant to be. We chat about the World Marathon Majors and Darren's take on running in two of them, what he thinks will be the pinnacle for him as a runner, what he works on when the going gets tough and the changes he would like to see in running.

Other subjects we touch on are leggings, lycra, gait analysis and other myths. If you've not done already, check out part 1 (episode 7). Darren is the host of a podcast I thoroughly enjoying listening to. You can check it out here: The Hundred Marathon Club.

You can read Darren's blog on his website at runnersknees.com.

#7 | Part 1 of 2: A Conversation with Darren Smith. The Artist also Known as Runner's Knees

The one with Runner's Knees. Part 2 will be arriving on Wednesday 9th December.

It was a pleasure to be joined by Darren Smith who is well known in the running community as 'Runner's Knees'. Darren is a multi-marathon and ultra finisher and is currently just over halfway through his quest into the Hundred Marathon Club. Darren dropped in for a chat about his journey of self-discovery, DNF'ing, the challenges he's faced during big endurance events, motivation and how running has enabled him to travel the world and meet many wonderful people.

Darren also explains why he finds the potential of failure to be something he is driven by and whether or not a training plan is important.

I have a great respect for Darren and being able to listen to his storytelling was humbling. You can find out more about Darren here:

#5 | Mikey Goodman and Pushing Through your Limitations

    A conversation with Mikey Goodman.

On this episode I am joined by Mikey who articulates his message about mental health in an incredible and powerful way. He talks through about his journey struggling with depression and anxiety, as well as coming out of coercively abusive relationship.

We have a chat about how through adversity he pushed through his limitations and how SAS: Who Dares Wins helped me discover himself more and why he enjoys tabbing and climbing up mountains.
