Ooshky - Scott Deas Shares the Story Behind His Unique Whisky Accessory
Creating and launching a product can be a lengthy process, often taking several years from conception to market. At Bring Your Product Idea To Life, I aim to provide a realistic behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to develop and sell your own product.
The journey doesn't end with the product launch; creators face the additional challenge of promoting and selling their innovation. Many juggle this process while maintaining other jobs, a balancing act that requires dedication and strategic time management.
This week's guest, engineer and entrepreneur Scott Deas, exemplifies this journey. Scott created Ooshky, a unique whiskey water pourer that combines the functionality of a bulb dropper and a pipette. This water drop-shaped jug allows whisky enthusiasts to add either a splash or a precise drop of water to their dram.
Scott sells Ooshky directly to consumers through his website and Amazon, and has also secured placement in over 20 retail shops. He shares his experience of bringing Ooshky to life, from the initial idea to prototype development and current manufacturing processes. Scott also discusses the unique marketing challenges of introducing a product so innovative that many people are unaware of its existence.
As a startup founder with a full-time job, Scott offers valuable insights into time management, task prioritisation, and the importance of identifying which activities to eliminate to make room for both his career and entrepreneurial pursuits.
Scott's story is a realistic perspective on the dedication required to turn a product idea into a successful venture while maintaining work-life balance.

Tackling Period Poverty - with Ruth Marsden, The Better Company
Ruth Marsden is the founder of The Better Company, a brand that sells reusable period products on a one-for-one donation model.
Ruth joined me to discuss her journey from an actress to an entrepreneur, creating a business that not only sells reusable menstrual products but also gives back to communities in need.
Ruth’s story is rooted in Zimbabwe, where she discovered that many girls miss school because they lack access to period products. Ruth decided to bring menstrual cups to this community, enabling girls to stay in school and improving their quality of life.
I loved hearing about what inspired Ruth to start her business, about her business model, the process of manufacturing an aesthetically appealing safe product, and how Instagram videos, press outreach, and educational content were crucial in demystifying and promoting her product.
