They Walk Among Us - UK True Crime

The narrators monotone delivery is a bit unusual but I’m used to it lol. I do listen to it at 1.25 speed sometimes. The content is good though so give it a go.

I used to listen to this podcast all the time and liked the narrators monotone voice. Decided to listen again after a couple years and the voice has absolutely changed and I’m 99% sure Yedcakes is right and this is some sort of text to speech AI based on the original narrators voice. Impossible to listen to now as the voice sounds so unnatural!

I’ve got some experience in the technical side of speech synthesis and I’m as sure as I can be that the narrator is now a text to speech engine trained on the narrator’s natural voice from the earlier episodes. Might be because of illness or disability, or might be to save time and hassle. If you only have to write a script then have TTS generate audio without having to record and edit a thing, that’s a big saving. Which unfortunately renders it completely unlistenable to my ear.

Sorry do not usually write reviews. However on this occasion I had to, as a native West midlander that was born in West Bromwich and went to school in Rowley Regis. I have to inform you that these are two separate towns entirely with different telephone area & postal codes! These are two of the six towns that make up the BOROUGH of ‘Sandwell’ in the West Midlands……….. Your voice & style of speech is “unique” & has become somewhat comforting actually…..The presentation of your content & coverage of the events are 10/10 and you draw me into every story you tell! I listen in bed most nights alongside my “Morbid girlie’s” …… KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK & I truly look forward to listening to your future content and back listening to previous seasons!
